mp40 external/internal safety
I just purchased a mp40 and I saw in the manual where toward the rear of the gun there is an optional internal lock. What is that? The only thing I don't like about this gun is there is no external safety. I have heard they can be put in. Any help? Can I put one in myself? Please help!!

If you look near the rear of the slide, you will see a spot that an external safety will be able to be installed. As of now, the parts to do this do not exist. S&W just released 9mm and .40 models at the SHOT show that will have external safeties.
The internal lock is a device that disables the trigger. Mine has a spot for the key, but doesn't have the lock equipped. I'm guessing that you're probably in the same boat. I do believe that these can be installed. Google for some M&P forums, I think you will be able to find good info there. EDIT: I looked at some other forums and I couldn't find any info. The internal lock was designed because some states require that your handgun has a safety of some sort. The fact that the M&P has no safeties except a trigger safety doesn't bother me. It's designed to be carried loaded, very much like a Glock. If I really wanted an external safety, the .45 M&P was available, or I could have gone the route of a Beretta 92 or M1911. I was wondering that. If you look at your model, there is a small square indent right about where a thumb safety would go. I'm thinking that we might be able to add these, although I'm definitely not certain.
Worst case, it gives me an excuse to get another M&P in a 2nd caliber/size ![]() |
