I have a M&P 40 (full size) that I shoot in IDPA matches. Great gun - no problems other than a factory mag that locked up and would allow 5 rounds to be loaded (S&W sent replacement no charge). I have about 5,000 rounds thru this gun.

Good choice MARC, I work at a range any have shot both guns quite a bit. The M&P has a much nicer trigger than the XD but the trigger configuration concerns me the pivot for the trigger safety seems like a good failure point but I haven't seen it happen yet. I never cared for S&W autos although their revolvers are indisputably the best, the autos were always lacking. Then in comes the M&P. At first I didn't give it a chance because it was just another "Glock clone" (Sorry I am a die hard Glock head). But after firing several students' M&Ps I have grown fond of them. Still not as good as Glock (Easy S&W guys!) But a well made gun. XD is designed after a 1911 grip angle which hasn't changed since 1906 while ergonomics have. That is why it doesn't feel as good in the hand to most people.

If a Glock fan says it's a decent gun, then I'm happy I respect Glocks highly, and if they fit my hand as good as my M&P does, I'd probably have one to go along side it.

I work at an indoor gunrange, and I get to try out a lot of CC style guns. I would go with the M&P. It fits my hand much better than the XD. But that's nothing if the XD fits you better. Also, (I think it was Evil who said this) the grip safety on the XD actually drives me nuts. I have fired an XD and an M&Pcompact both, and the M&P is much more accurate, insanely accurate for a small gun. Like you said, the felt recoil is minimal. I prefer the M&P because it fits me like a glove. The XD may just fit you better. I suggest going to a gunshop and trying both out. See which one feels better, and ask if you can try one of the holsters and see how comfortable they both are while concealed. Hope this helps! Cowboy

I shoot the Glock17, XD and M+P. I like them all. The Glock has had trigger work as well as my XD. My favorite trigger is now the XD since there is no creep, very little pretravel and quick reset. A little polishing on the sear group and match springs. Total investment $48 and I now like it better than the Glock which was my favorite. Shoot what you shoot best.

I would stay away from the Taurus 24/7, I have herd a lot of bad things about them. I have never shot a XD though. One of the things I like about the S&W M&P is that the slide is stainless steel and yet it has a black non-reflective finish. Most stainless steel guns have a shinny finish that I don't like. And everyone I know who owns one loves them. A Beretta PX-4 is also a good polymer frame gun. The S&W M&P has also received get reviews on a Guns 2008 magazine that's in stores now.
