Since you are up on S&W revolvers, here's a question; I have a handy little model 63, .22 J-frame in stainless with a 4" bbl., and a square butt. SN 6286X . When was it made? I was told they only made them for a year. I don't know. It's the ideal packing .22 for me and very accurate with a butter-smooth action.

Hello cjleete
J-Frames are not as clear cut as the Larger K-N-fram revolvers on serial numbers. Here is what I have on the j-frame numbers to show.. Hammerdown

1-786544 1950-1969 36 ,37,38,49,50,60

Hello all K-22 fans. My only S&W is a Nickel Platted 44mag fromthe early seventies. Kind of a Clint iconic piece. But trying to add a quality piece to my collection and was looking at this K-22. Some guidance on age, SN# K959727 and value would be great. Here are a couple pics of the piece, as attachments, I hope....
thanks, great forum..

chuckpen...

BUY IT - you'll never be sorry! I sold my first one a whole bunch a years ago and have regretted it every day! I have made some shots with it that you would never believe if I told you (open sites). I have a soft spot for the 8 3/8". Have since replaced it several times over.

I think around $6 - $800 depending on age and condition. That one looks pretty nice... Did I say buy it? If you don't, let me know where it's at. No..., I only like the 8 3/8.

Good luck and let us know all the details after your decision.

Update on that K-22. Pistol had two screws on the right side, nothing on the underside as far as screws that I could see, had a pinned barrel and recessed cyl, as advertised. Hire this guy to take pictures as this K-22 was pretty well used as a shooter and looks a lot better in the pics vs. in person. Wanted $500 for it, no box, no accessories except the rag it was wrapped in. I passed on it.

Hello
Your gun was made in 1955. It is called a Five Screw Version due to the four side Plate screws and the one in front of the trigger Guard. The diamond magna grips it has are period correct if you remove the right panel it should have your guns serial number stamped on it.. Hammerdown

Hello Muddydog
The Single line address as it is called that is stamped "Made in The U.S.A." was used Up Until 1947. In 1948 They came out with the what is called the Four Line address that reads"Marcus registratus Springfileld, Mass" and such totaling Four Lines on the Lower front main Revolver frame... Hammerdown

Hello MD
Not Knocking your K-22 Here But everything about Price is about Overall condition on any Classic S&W Revolver. I see some Pitting on your barrel and Bluing Loss from Holster carry so it is a good shooter grade but not collector status. I would rate it about 75% due to it's condition I have seen many Like it in the $300.00-$375.00 Range. Here is a Early 1947 Model that was the first year Post-War of the K-22 with a very Low 4 digit serial number. It is a Transition Piece due to the Pre-War Mushroom style extractor Head. The grips are serial numbered to it Being Original from the factory and I Gave $500.00 for it which was a steal to me as it is easily in 98% Condition... Hammerdown

Hammer Down,

Your knowledge of the S&W history is very impressive! I wonder if you can answer this question? On the right side of the barrel of a .22 Smith, on either side of the ".22 long rifle ctg" is an emblem/marking that looks like a sideways T superimposed over a sideways H. I see it on K 22's and also on my .22/.32 Kit gun. I have also seen in on older Model 41's. Do you know anything about when and why this marking was put on older Smiths, and when it was discontinued?

Thanks for your posts and any info about this question.

Hello
That symbol first showed up in 1931 On S&W .22 Revolvers. It was to let users of those revolver and ones made after it that it was Tested with High speed Ammo. Prior to 1931 22 ammo was not as Potent nor did it have the velocity of the New High Speed ammo Introduced in 1930. The ammo Back then clocked an amazing 1450 FPS and the extra Pressures involved were actually Rupturing Case heads in revolver's without a recessed cylinder, and Hurtin shooters Eyes or By standers at shooting events. This Troubled DB Wesson as he was all about Safety for shooters so it was he that designed the first recessed cylinder that encompassed the case shell head and stopped this case rupture. It was the Most copied design after that as he cared more about shooter safety then he did a pattent so everyone else stole his Brilliant Idea. The 22 cases back then were also made of Copper and shortly after all the case head explosions Companies making ammo changed to brass... Hammerdown

I need some help on this . . . I purchased the longed-K22 recently. I believe it to be a Model 17. This baby is in beautiful shape. It has a six inch barrel. I can find no numbers inside of the yoke except for a faint part number. The serial on this one is K 311XXX. There are two screws holding the side plate on and a screw in front of the trigger guard. Also a pinned barrel. The blueing is super glossy (Almost like polished). What really mystifies me is that the trigger and hammer has this same finish. No, it isn't paint, it is the hard blue like the rest of the gun. I have never seen a finish on these parts before on a S&W. What does this denote?? The gun came without case or papers. I would appreciate some info. Thanks!
