Hello
Checking ym Data Base it Places the serial here Late 1950-K-84150--K-104047. In 1950 they used the Tall 1/8" front Patridge sight as a standard order sight for the last year, and changed to the 1/10" Lower Profile sight in 1951. It is a Five screw frame with a Matte Low gloss Bluing. Average price of them now in Good condition is $700.00... Hammerdown

Great thread. This is my first post here and I found you while searching for information on the K-22, sn# k 1547xx I picked up at a garage sale this morning. Very nice 85% gun and the price was very right. This is my first Smith & Wesson since I turned my mighty Combat Masterpiece back in to the USAF when I left SEA.

Hello Chance
Welcome to the forum. By the serial number you gave it appears your K-22 was made in 1952. Regards, Hammerdown

Thanks Hammerdown. The information here is great and I thank you for the ship date. Being a "Ruger guy" I had no idea where to start so it was nice to hit the jackpot here.

Hi guys,
I'm new here and come from Malta in Europe.
Just traded in an IMI Jericho 9mm cal with Smith&Wesson K-22 and I think I made a good deal
Hardly had it for 24hrs and already in love with it and just can't wait to give it a go.
It's got a wide trigger blade and hammer and it's got mod 17-4 on it. Most probably it's one of the new ones used for target shooting as i've never seen one like it before.
Serial number is 33k6015.........can anyone identify the date of manufacture of my K-22 please?
Here is a pic of it I took this morning.
Thanks and regards
Kris

Hello Kris Welcome to the forum. In 1970 S&W started Placing Numbers in front of the K-Prefix in their K-Series serial Numbers. The Placing of the Number's before the prefix was the first serial number Modification since the Post-War 1946 Era Models. Yours being a model 17-4 Means it is the Forth variation Model change. In 1957 S&W started stamping Model numbers into the crane area, and as changes in the model were made Mainly Internal changes, They changed the dash numbers Hence your Model 17-4. According to my serial number Reference, you Gun was made in 1979. Regards, Hammerdown

Hello thorsanvil
There should be a K-Prefix before the actual serial number on your gun. It should Read K21885 on the Butt of the Grip Frame and that serial number shows to be shipped in 1948 Two Years after S&W resumed civilian Production of hand guns after World War II making yours a second Year Post-War K-22. Regards, Hammerdown

Hello,
I just found out I had a K-22! The bad part was I've been in possession of it for about 15 years and didn't even know it. I was going through some old boxes of stuff that was left over from when my grandfather passed away, and low and behold, there it was!
Could someone help me date it. The serial number is K 161***
Thanks,
OC

Thanks for the info Hammer Down! I am in the middle of moving to a different state, and was forced to go through all the stuff that has been neglected over the years. Finding gems like this has made me rethink leaving stuff laying around for so long. Time to go out and lay down a few rounds! OC

Great Forum, and like many others I do have a question about a Model 18-4 I currentlly own.
I purchased this gun used about 15 years ago, used it one or twice, cleaned it and it's been in storage ever since. It's in great condition, cylinder and bore are clean, and there is no rust, pitting, or other visable defects.
As the gun is never used I'm considering selling it, and would like to know if anyone could tell me when it was manufactured, and it's approximately 'realistic' value.
The Serial Number is 228K1XX
Thank you. |

Hello
According to my Reference material your Model 18-4 was made in 1982--125K-269K999. It is not wearing it's original Factory grips and most 18's came with the smaller style Magna grips. They would be the Non-Diamond center grips as were installed Post 1968 time span. It does show some Cosmetic Damage on several different areas as it appears to have been caried in a Holster and shot some with the bluing wear on the extractor rod, and other areas of the gun but any good model 18 will fetch an average of $350-$400.00 mark alone and if you add a box, The correct grips and paperwork that will raise the Price a Tad Bit more. I hope this helps, Hammerdown

Hammer Down, thank you for the quick reply and information as it answered all the questions I had.
I purchased the 18-4 from a privite party and it already had the shown grips attached, and the only paperwork I have is a Parts, Instruction, Maintenance Booklet.
Thanks again, I appreciate the information..

You are very welcome. if it were me, and I would not sell it. The Only one I regretted selling took me 13 Years to find again and twice as much money to Purchase it. It will be here in about a week and a half and I will Post Pictures of it when it shows. It is a First Year {1959} Four Screw Model 48 which is the .22 W.M.R. K-22 but this one has t he auxillary .22 L. R. Cylinder option along with it... Hammerdown

I am purchasing a Smith and Wesson model 17. The bluing appears to be about 98% with a very smooth single and double action release and a great looking bore. The firearm seems to be quite sound and the 350.00 price; wonderful. The serial number is K936938. The crane states this is a 17-3. The gun is pinned and recessed with magna grips which appear to be original.
Is there anyone who may know the approximate year of this firearm plus any other interesting details.
Thank you,
Lever4Ever

Hello Lever4Ever
Acording to my Reference material, Your K-22 is a 1969 Model. The Dash-3 Model Ran from 1967-1976 and There were Two changes made in that series. One being t he Relocation of the rear sight leaf screw in 1967 being the first change and the Dropping of the center diamond inset on the Grips in 1968. Yours would have come with what we call Non -Diamond center grips. Most came with the smaller Profile service style grips we call magna meaning Magnum filling the hand more than the earlier style service grips below the trigger guard area. The Bluing will be High Polished Carbonna style and some of the most eye appealing Bluing Placed on a Post-War K-22 Like the 17-2's had as well. It will have a 1/10" Patridge front sight Blade and is of the Three screw design Meaning Three screws holding the side Plate in Place. I hope this helps, Hammerdown
