Looking for INFO

Hello HammerDown: I have a .38 CTG that my grandfather traded for a Radiator Repair some time in the 50's. The SN is 54349X which match on all three parts. Any info you have would be great

Shown below is one of mine with a 5" Barrel that shipped in 1939 and is Dang close to your serial number, I hope this helps... Hammerdown

Hammerdown, You do seem to be the expert in this model, mine look very close to the pic above except three screw vice four screw and the grip handle curves downward S/N S 874188, anything you can tell me about this gun? Thanks you.

Hello
According to yoyur serial number and given the fact that your gun is the round butt version it sppears to be a Late 1947 Gun. it should have the one line address and long style action. Yours is a very early round butt variation and is a Five screw model but will have the later Matte style bluing like the 5" square butt example shown, that was made in 1946. I hope this helps, Hammerdown

Hi. I am trying to find more out about a smith & wesson 38 special ctg, serial number J186502. It is blued, 2 1/3" barrel. It was purchased in 1966-67.

I am also curious if it is +P rated, and where I can purchase a holster for concealed carry?

Hello CrimsonCalc
They started using the J-Prefix on the small frame Chiefs special revolvers chambered in .38 Special caliber in 1970. If your Gun has a J-Prefix before it's serial number on the bottom of the grip frame it is from around 1973. If there is no J-Prefix before it's serial number is is from around 1962-1963 Time span and would be considered a 36. The model Pre-36 came out in 1950 These guns were Pre-36's as they did not stamp the guns model number in the crane area until 1957 time span. It is made on the J-Frame being the smaller of the Three common more modern frames. They came blued or Nickle in finish and were Five shot cylinders. I would not suggest any Plus-P ammo in the Older vintage Model 36's being ones made prior to 1980 Time span they werre intended to shoot the standard .38 Special ammo. I hope this help's, Hammerdown

Can you help another soul? ...old S&W 38 Special

Hammerdown, You have impressive knowledge as shown in this thread.
I inherited an old .38 Special...
s/n: 138876, on bottom of grip
blue
5" barrel from front of cylinder to end of barrel
no letters anywhere
only other number is a very small "5498" on the frame behind the post that holds the cyclinder
very smooth action, I would call it a long pull
the extractor rod has a small knurled "knob" on the end

Can you help with age and value?

Thank you!

Hello all. I am a new member and new owner of a Smith & Wesson .38 Special. The Special has a 4" barrel, adjustable sights, and a serial number of 1K35067 and is a Model 15. Any clue on the year that this pistol was made? I just took it out to the range and it is a dream to fire.

S&W .38 Special CTG Help

I.m trying to find out the history and value of this gun. It's in really nice shape aside from a few key parts I need to find. It looks good on the outside, but pretty crummy inside. If I've read up correctly, I believe it is a 4 screw model with a 4 inch barrel. The mainspring is broken and the front site is broken off. I've been reading up alot on the CTG's but none of them really look or sound exactly like mine. I'll describe it the best I can. The pant dates are on the top of the barrel. Some of it is cut off by where the front site was, but what's left reads: 6.06 sept.14.09 dec.29.14

The marking in the crane are apears to read 22250 and the stamp on the bottom of the grip area reads 398103.

I'd like to find an age and a parts breakdown if possible. Any help you guys can give would be most appreciated.

Model 36 S&W, .38 spl., 3 in. barrel

I just recently got an old S&W Model 36 with a 3 inch barrel .38 special. The serial # is J428xxx. And I am getting very frustrated at S&W for not giving the public access to the serial number/date of manufacturing information. It seems to me that they are trying to profit by making you buy some book instead of just listing such data online like Winchester does. I just want an approximate date and not the whole history of every model they have ever made. Does anyone own this magic book and could you please try to help me in my quest for my pistols DOB? please?

S & w .38 ctg

My father passed away and while sorting through his things I came across a revolver and a shotgun. I have never been around guns so I know nothing about them or how to use them. I found some markings on both pieces and if anyone has any information I would love to hear it.

1) Stamped s & w .38 ctg on barrel with a serial number stamped on the bottom of the grip c 320857 also has something spanish underneath the smith and wesson logo on the side of the gun. Dont make fun...I'm old and cant see.

2) winchester model 90-22 shotgun...not sure where the serial number is on that one.

Any information would be appreciated.

Much Thanks....

I have a S&W 38 Special Ctg with the serial # v20699* and s 50939 on left side of the gun frame. It is nickel finish. I have read previous posts and the v 20699* is also on the bottom of the barrel. Can you tell me when the gun was made and how much it may be worth? Gun is in fair to good condition, there is a small amount of wear on it.
