sorry, was driving all day today, so didnt have a pc nearby to reply with. my smith called me and said the ammo wasn't hot loaded at all, but that the "chamber" on the #2 was at fault. it seemed to have been cut in a conical shape, where the back of chamber was too large diameter and front was a lil too small with a small lip of extra steel hanging out into line of bullet. maybe someone forgot to inspect? or forgot to finish the machining? i don't know, but i've contacted S&W's online support to see what they have to say. Federal American Eagle 240gr

Not the first Smith I've seen in that shape, but I'm kinda impressed that they owned up to it being their error. Glad nobody got fragged. That'd make a good pic for an ad for shooting glasses. Glocks just blow up for no reason?!?! Just I was gettin' up the nerve for an in the pants carry. Great! lol |

| Mike, think about this before you do anything else,
I'll tell you one thing, S&W is going to want that gun back in their hands immediately. because if they are at fault that is the evidence in a very nasty lawsuit where they are liable. maybe you are all right with your head busted open, but if you had lost an eye or became horribly disfigured from it you would be thinking differently. the thing is their level of liability in the matter is still the same. all ammo used at the time would also have to be kept for investigation. just my 2 cents. Criss one more thing. if they get the gun back in their posession, more than likely they will claim it was something you did to cause it and it is not covered under their warranty. once they have it in their hands, there is no way they will give it back up. that cylinder will simply disappear from existence.

so it was a brand new gun and it blew up the first time you fired it? if not, howcome the out of shape chamber didn't cause it to explode when the first shot went out of it? I'm no expert but couldn't the explosion have caused the deformity in the cylinder? if it wasn't the first shot, did you notice any difference in accuracy when the offending chamber was fired?

it's a revolver and this was the second time it had been fired....revolvers have multiple chambers, not same chamber....maybe you already knew that and i missunderstood the question. deadzero, i agree, S&W isn't getting their hands on this....not until it's been independantly inspected and documented as being in existence. Gonna get a few opinions then go to the ATF and have one of their specialists inspect and document it. S&W sent me an automated email asking me to return it to the manufacturer for further review lol....they're gonna have to wait till i get it inspected and documented before i send it off. Ammo will be checked too, updates of what is found out and such will be added when i get them.

FUNNY THING...I just got an E-mail about this Blowup and It said... "Someone needs to learn how to reload. M629 BLOWUP A guy came into our department the other day to ask a favor. He had a S&W 629 that he wanted to dispose of after a mishap at the range. He said there was a loud bang when he tested his new load and the gun smacked him in the forehead, leaving a nice gash. When the tweety birds cleared, this is what he saw....." And it had the same Photos Mike Posted about this happening to him... something Smells Fishy here....

I got the same e-mail from a friend who is a glock nut. He said it was proof I needed to junk my S&W's.

This blow up is on several forums. Some times it factory ammo, others it's a reload. The destruction pattern sure looks like a double charge to me. You double charge or grab the wrong can of powder it well come apart. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Well SAM it was on Jan 16, 1981. Which was my wedding day and I had a buddy who was a police officer and ordained minister show up to perform the ceremony with a cigar box that contained something he just couldn't wait to show me. I "think" it was a 65 or 66 definitely a k frame. Sorry I didn't think to take a pic, but I had other stuff on my mind like calming down my future mother-in-law. The other was an issue 65 that had a wadcutter stuck in the barrel when the operator fired something that wasn't a wadcutter. He said he thought the wadcutter was a clean miss. I guess one that doesn't make it all the way out the barrel is technically a miss?
