A good reload. You can make it just for your gun(s).

Winchester Ranger 165gr SXT® Talon.

That's what I carry everyday in my G27 and what the local Sheriff's Department uses.

It also comes in 155gr and 180gr.

Yes, I am a "normal" civilian.

That is a Winchester policy to not sell it to civies. With the rationale that they want the LEO's to get first pick at their best premium ammo to give them an edge... or some crap like that. There's nothing illegal about using ammo that says "LE-Only" on it. (unless you have a local/state law specifically outlawing hollow-points or LE-Only ammo)

I bought a case of 500 rounds from a gentleman over on the glocktalk forums for $175 shipped, just before there was to be an increase in price.

By the way, for anyone wanting to purchase Winchester Ranger ammo, this is the guy to go to: New Factory Fresh Winchester Ranger (RA40TA) Ammo - Free Shipping - Glock Talk

Yes, that is me at the bottom endorsing him after doing great business with him.

He also has other threads there with the .40 180gr, 9mm, and 5.56mm (which he said is currently out of stock).

Remington golden sabers bonded are that Ive been using they fly nice and should pack a punch, they have a nice deep hollow point too.

Ad far as using re-loads for defense horrible idea. 2 reasons, Reloads can be testy and thats all you need is a squib load when someone is baring down on you.

Also and most importantly, when your in a civil battle over the man you just killed, even though he was trying to kill you, when the lawyer holds up the casing and says,"these were reloads that this man put together himself in his basement using his own homemade powder with his military equipment blah blah blah blah blah(no matter what of it is true you cannot hope you get 12 people that know about guns and reloading. You will probably end up with 12 gun haters. Any way you have just made a bullet that was designed for killing.

They are going to say you tinkered to find a round that would not stop the threat but kill a man, Your toast.

CorBon DPX and Speer GolDot 165 grain have the best track record in my humble opinion. Here is a little more information:
.40 Smith & Wesson Caliber:
One Shot Stopping Success: 71-96% (Actual)
Self Defense Rating: Best
Recommended Cartridges:

Cor-Bon "Nosler"
JHP
135 grains
96%
Federal
JHP
155 grains
94%
Remington "Golden Saber"
JHP
165 grains
94%
Federal "Hydra-Shok"
JHP
155 grains
93%
Cor-Bon
JHP
150 grains
92%
Winchester "Silvertip"
JHP
155 grains
91%
Federal "Hydra-Shok"
JHP
180 grains
89%
Cor-Bon +P
JHP
180 grains
86%

In .40 caliber, the original 180-grain hollow point at subsonic velocity has worked better than expected, but the star performers in .40 ammo tend to be high tech bullets such as the Winchester SXT or Ranger T, the CCI Gold Dot, and the Remington Golden Saber with 155-grain bullets at 1200 foot-seconds or 165-grain bullets at 1140 to 1150 feet per second. Using the 165-grain Ranger in their .40 caliber Glocks, the Nashville, Tennessee, Police have amassed a long series of impressive one-shot stops.

With the knowledge you can fire a different round (.357 Sig) out of a .40 platform with a barrel change, this may be of interest too:

Most other departments have gone to more powerful rounds. The .40 S&W caliber is the overwhelming top choice of police departments today, followed by the .357 SIG and the .45. Created to duplicate the best ballistics of the .357 Magnum revolver in a semiautomatic pistol, the .357 SIG spits a 125-grain jacketed hollow point at 1300 to 1400 feet per second, delivering 500-plus foot-pounds of energy. Departments which have adopted it are delighted with the performance, reporting a high frequency of one-shot stops. The Virginia State Police, who issue the .357 SIG Model P229 pistol, told me that they were particularly pleased with the number of felons who dropped and stopped fighting after receiving non-fatal wounds in non-vital parts of the body.

This makes me feel even better about a round that I know performs well that I carry on a daily basis; as I mentioned on page one.

From an Air Force Cop to a LE guy... good to know ya. The .40 is a sweet round and great at 1-shot stops. I'm a Sig P229 Equinox carrying guy in .40 and would not trade it for the world. Simply put, in my opinion (and subjective, obviously) the .40 is the best out there.

I also shoot a Springfield Armory XD in .357 Sig ... does anyone else? This is one hell of a round... shoots through most barriers as well as level 2 vests. I'd hate to face it...

Doea anyone else have a take on the .357 Sig ?

It's good to know you, too... but I must set the record straight.

I am just a civilian who carries every day in defense of myself should such a need arise (also to make sure my second amendment rights aren't lost due to non-use). The fact that I carry what Winchester considers "Law Enforcement Ammunition" (as printed on the box) does not LE-make. There is a source over on GlockTalk.com that sells Winchester Ranger ammo to civilians at a very good price and I don't see any reason why I shouldn't use the best I can get.

As for USAF, good on ya! My father is a USAF In-country Vietnam veteran and I have much respect for that branch of service.
