I have read how accurate these pistols are, but what kind of grouping should I expect? The only ammo I have tried is Win 155 gr. silvertip HP, and accuracy hasn't been worth bragging about. Maybe 5" at 7 yards, and high and right. More testing is in order.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

My subcompact XD does that well but I can assure you it would do better if the shooter was better. At my age and with my eyesight I am happy with 5" groups at 7 yards. The pistol is much better than I am.
With some practice you should be able to shoot pretty accurately. You have to take time to get used to your gun. On a good day at 25 yards I can put all the rounds inside the rings on a silouette target. On a bad day there aren't even holes in the wood behind the target. I don't think the gun changes so I usually blame the bullets.
You should expect to see very close and good groupings.
Here is what I shot Sunday with a new XD 40. This is the first session with this gun. I was using 180gr fmj at 25 feet.
I thought even though I had one flyer the group was much better than I was expecting for the first session.
These are very accurate. This is 20 rounds at 7 yds., 2 hand. The 3 at the top
were my first 3, then I remembered that XD's are set for aiming at
6 o'clock, so after adjusting I got the rest pretty good for me.
I was shooting WWB, 180 gr FMJ.

I have been shooting my service .40 for a long time. If I do my part I can shoot 2-4 inch groups at 20-25 yards on a regular basis. I mainly use the gun for IDPA ESP division and USPSA Production. If you can't get used to the factory sights you may want to try adjustable sights. I have the Dawson set on my service model and we melted a set of Bomar's onto my XDM.
Like with any new gun, you just have to shoot more and get used to it. Every gun is different and takes practice. I have a .40 XD Subcompact. The first time I shot it I had about a 7 to 8" group at 7 yards. The more I shot it the better I got. I don't think it was my skill getting any better, it was me getting used to that gun. Now I shoot about a 3.5" to 4" group at 7 yards which i know isn't perfect but with a .40 and a 3" barrel I'm happy with it. My goal is under 3" at 15 yards. I don't know if that will ever happen but I sure am going to try. The XD is a great gun. Just practice more.
