OK Just so you all know, I fired 100 rounds through the XDM 3.8 and the XD Subcompact, and sadly I am no closer to a decision. I loved both of them, and it really comes down to 4 basic differences:
Capacity - the XDM wins (other than with the 19+1 capacity I'll go broke buying Ammo)
Concealability - Effectively a tie. The XD is better without the mag extension, but my pinky and part of my ring finger are off the grip.
Price - XD Wins
Goodies - The XDM Wins when you include the xtra mag, paddle holster, etc.
I own the XDM 40, a friend of mine the XDM 9. It's a great gun, Ive been on Crimson Trace to make laser grips for it. I believe the newer XDM line to be superior to the XD line. Save your money and get the XDM, you'll be happy you did. This is concerning the full size (4.5") models

When I got my XD and XDM they both came with all the goodies as you call them. I also got a Springfield EMP that also came with them. You might want to check and see if the XD still come with that stuff. The extra mag is the only thing I actually use. The other stuff including the case are stored in a closet. I wouldn't even concider that stuff in you decision.

Good advice
Both guns feel and shoot great.
Guess the ? is to I really need the extra 7 rounds.
U guys r NOT very helpful
At least I know whichever I buy I am buying one of the very best handguns on th market.
If you're need is for a carry gun though I'd say go small & lightweight and I believe the smaller of the two is the XD subcompact (3")
I'm A Little partial to my wheel gun for concealed carry. Neither the XD or XDM is gonna out shoot my ruger .357 at close in range.
It only carries 5 rounds but they are 5 really good rounds.

When I went to the gunshop looking at different guns, my choices were the XD, XDm, and S&W M&P. After holding them all, I didn't see how the S&W was worth $100 more than the XD, and I also didn't feel or see paying $130 more for the XDm. They both felt the same in my hand and I didn't see paying for a match grade barrel that could group maybe an inch smaller or removable backstraps when the ones on it and the XD felt the same and felt pretty good.
If you like the extra features of the XDm, I would say go for it! I just personally don't think it was worth $130 more to me than the XD. The XD is still a very nice gun and it functions flawlessly!
O, I almost forgot, the model I got only came with an extra 16rd 9mm mag and not the mag holster or gun holster. However, because of the dirt and dust where I live, I was advised to not use either of those two or any plastic type holsters because the dirt that gets in them will scratch the gun up! It is pretty dusty and dirty out here though...

I personally love the look of the XDm and would buy the XDm over the XD because I would like to have the latest model of the pistol. Right now I am deciding between the Ruger SR9c or the XDm to buy. Are there any left handed shooters who carry and use the XDm or XD who could chime in with their experience. This is the factor that is keeping me buying one, I am a left handed shooter and since I have never held the gun just yet, I am not sure if I could work the controls efficiently being left handed.
I would be carrying the gun for CCW as well, and I agree with the 3.8" version being a great compromise for the size aspect situation.
Hey guys, new around here. I am looking to get a better conceal carry handgun. I currently have a Glock 23 .40S&W. While it's ok, it can be somewhat uncomfortable sitting down for longer periods of time. Instead of just getting a Glock 27, I really like the reviews of the Springfield XD and XDM.
I am looking at XD 3" vs XDM 3.8". While a little bit bigger barrell and the higher capacity, from what I read the XDM is only about 2oz heavier. Will the XDM stick out the holster that much more than the XD? Is it really make a difference as far as comfort goes to get the XD? I figure if it's more comfortable I will carry more often.
My other question is that I have not fired either, but those that have fired both. Is there a noticeable difference in the recoil between the 2. (.40 S&W if possible) Most important thing in a defensive conceal carry is the time between lining up shots and staying as accurate as possible in a highly stressful situation.
Price does not really matter if XDM is just as comfortable or recoil is a little better.

Cremley, you took the words right out of my month! XD is for me.....

I have an XD 40 and have shot the XDM 40 and I can say this. I just couldn't tell any difference. I love my XD and see no reason to spend the extra money.
no its not a marketing ploy. for those that notice little things there is a slightly different feel to them noticed especially when racking to the rear if you pay attention to how your fingers feel on the slide that alone is noticeable difference
