My new Steyr - With PICS!

I mentioned last month about my first new Steyr. Well, I just completed re-finishing her and putting her back together this past weekend. What do you think?

Got 150 rounds of mil-surp on "CHARGER" clips, and another 100 rounds (loose) coming tomorrow. Wish I had the resources to reload these.....

Very nice!

I'd get one, only the ammo is really expensive and I don't have the resources to reload right now. Oh well.

They look really good. Especially yours! I hope refinishing it was fun for you, and I hope any more projects that you do will be even more rewarding to you.

Resources? Since it's so much cheaper to reload them them I would find the resources.

fyi:lee precision is closing out their single cavity molds for the 8x56r.they are .329 diameter ,205 grain and cost $14.this might help with part of the reloading problem.by the way, nice job with the stock.

By "resources", I was referring not only to the cost of material and tools but also to that fact that I need to attend a "Reloading 101 Class" to actually learn how the H*** to do it! I think there's more to it than just, "put a new primer in the head, fill the casing with gunpowder and hammer a bullet in the other end......"

Nope, that's pretty much it.........

Try looking at the videos on you tube and Lee Precision to give you an idea what is involved.

Thanks for the compliments! It was fun working on it and I got a lot of satisfaction with the end result. Now I've got a couple more to start on as soon as I can find the time......

Bolt can be a SOB to get back in but I've learned that the "dime" trick works the best. First of all, make sure you've got the bolt back together correctly (Surplusrifle.com has great PDF files on this). Once you get the bolt head extended, place a dime in the channel on top between the bolt head and the bolt body (it fits perfectly). Now place the bolt back in the receiver (with the dime still keeping the bolt head extended) and as you push the bolt forward, take the dime out once the bolt head is locked into the receiver channel. Voilla! it's back together!

If you can afford the ammo to buy, it would not take all that much more to reload!

My Steyr has never fired a single piece of Milsurp since I bought her! Neither has my 8mm Mauser. If there weren't so much cheap milsurp deals on 7.62X54R and 7.63X39, and 7.62X25, I would never fire milsurp in them guns, either. I don't like corrosive primers.

I use 48 grains of H4895 powder. That was the minimum amount where I was not getting sooty cases from insufficient pressure sealing the chamber, and the least punishing on my poor abused shoulder.

I was also going to inquire to your refinish methods and stain. It looks great! I refinished an old beat up stock on one of my M95 carbines in BLO only. It looks pretty good.
