Landscaping light for battery charging question

I plan, that if need be, I will use my landscaping (solar powered) to recharge AA batteries in a SHTF situation. My question is, is the solar charging system in these made so they will only handle a AA battery? My thought was to solder a wire to the + terminal and another to the - terminal and then attaching them to the respective ends of other sized batteries to recharge them. Think this would work?

For common 1.5 volt batteries this will work fine (D, C, AA, AAA and AAAA). For higher voltagebatteries (C-123s, 6 Volt Lantern, etc.) you will have to gang more than one unit in series. With the larger capacity D and C batteries you will have a longer charging time.

Never thought of using them for that. Now I'll definitely have to get some. And I was recently looking at them. But to use in the event of a power outage for around the house.

Thumbs up

Purpose built solar chargers with larger panels (reduced charging time) aren't that expensive.
I have been using some AA and AAA rechargeable batteries lately, and the long-term money savings more than offsets the cost of a true charger. Also, a good charger has overload protection, and will shut down once the batteries are charged. Rechargeables get warm - sometimes VERY warm - during charging......

on a bright day, most deer feeder battery chargers throw a low amp 6 volts. They can be rigged otherwise.

Just remember that not all batteries will respond well to being recharged. And rechargeables come in all kinds of mw ratings.

I think a stockpile of lithiums with their 10 year shelf life is a good alternative to consider.

Check our harbour freight. They have some reasonable solar panels. Remember. you get what you pay for

Lots of good feedback, thanx. My main concern was could it be done as a field expiedient method if all else was not available. I have a small stash of batts but eventually want to upgrade to lithium or rechargables with a combo AC/ solar charger.
