NYC would be a BIG problem as you have the islands that the people are on have only a certain number of ways off. Most food is delivered "just in time" so there's not stock piles of it. If you've ever seen "The Stand" mini-series, you'll see where the tunnels and bridges are completely choked with vehicles. Anyone with money and sense would figure out to get out of the city before hand. Other big cities are a little better off by NOT being on islands. You can get out of DC into Maryland quite easily. Heading south, not so much. I live and work out in the suburbs for a reason.

Not only will the cities be in turmoil but so will all the surrounding suburbs and even rural towns off of the main highways within a 300 mile radius.

During the mass evac of New Orleans prior to Katrina, thousands from the area who did leave completely inundated and emptied out the gas stations and store of small rural towns along the main evacuation routes. And when people ran out of gas and food they were not happy.

So just keep in mind, just because you may not live in or even what you think as close to a larger city, doesn't mean you are necessarily "out of the woods yet".

Put it this way, if you did leave in a city, and now you left in your car, with a full tank of gas, how far will you get in heavy stop and go traffic before you need to refill? What is your potential travel radius? Find that average, plain on everyone else doing the same thing and falling into the same problem.

what i would take for weapons:
Socom MkI M1A1 .308 and Mildot scope on raised rail(allows iron sight use) with 11xmagazines(20rnds ea) + 2xmagazines(10rnds ea)
Glock21 .45 with 8xmagazines(13rnds ea)
bayonet/survival knife and several other knives
Moss590 Cmbt Shotgun(12ga)

full CMBT load out gear(LBV, Flak vest, soft body armor,Kevlar, and Alice pack(Large) with all of our basic needs)

my wife:
Moss500(12ga)
H&K USP .45 with 6xmagazines(10rnds ea)
survival knife(K-Bar style)
soft body armor and Alice Pack(Small)
she will be toting/sheparding our daughter hence less loadout.

our daughter will tote a portion of supplies in her Day pack as well

You need more mags for your M1A. If you are toting a M1A, then drop your shotgun. That seems like too much firearms and clearly not enough loaded magazines. I can clearly understand having a handgun in tow, but to carry a shotgun and a battle rifle seems a bit like too much of a load. I guess if you can handle it, then all the power to you. I am a fan of the H&K USP, but consider selling it and buying another Glock 21. Get the small frame version for your wife, and then you can utelize the same magazines. You should be able to sell the H&K and have money left over for more mags.

Just to give you a reference, my family is setup with firearms for bugging out as such:
I will carry the following:
H&K 91 with paratrooper collapsing stock and 7 mags loaded with 20 rounds
1 battle pack with 200 rounds of 7.62x51 ammo
1 Beretta 96 with 5 loaded mags of 11 rounds each in .40 S&W
H&K 91 Bayonet/combat knife
Wife will have the following:
H&K 91 with slim forearm and stock with rubber buttplate added.
3 30 round mags and 2 20 round mags.
1 Beretta 96 with 5 loaded mags of 11 rounds eash in .40 S&W
H&K 91 bayonet/combat knife
Daughter(9YO):
Ruger 10/22 with 4 tac innovations mags with 25 rounds each
Boker Kalashnikov knife
500 rounds .22LR ammo
My sons are too young to be able to handle firearms without endangering themselves and those around them. Once old enough, they will get the 10/22 setup my daughter has and she will advance to first a Yugo M70 underfolder, and then to either a CETME or H&K 91.

Buggin out with multiple guns and calibers seems like setting yourself up for a fall, but then perhaps having multiple firearms with multiple calibers might mean you will be able to replenish depleted ammo easier. It is hard to call this right.

In a scenario like The Stand when I was working in New York City, my plan was to head to the 79th Street Boad Basin on the West Side and see what I could steal to head north up the Hudson. It was 40-plus blocks from where I was working at the time, but the boats there are small enough for one person to manage. I'd recommend that over trying to travel by road. The Hudson is navigable as far north as Albany to ocean-going vessels; I've been that far north on the river. In a small craft, you can get father up the Hudson than that, well outside the NYC urbanites' driving radius into upstate rural New York. At that point, assuming you haven't come down with Captain Trips, you can consider your next moves.

I would for sure be packing an assault rifle, my 45, and most likely a longer range rifle, 30-06 or something to that affect. 30-30 bullets are easy to come by also. I would be ditching my 45-70, too damn heavy.

if i had to get out today i would take my remington 870 in 12ga,an old colt 357mag and my mosin. i have a stockpile of ammo for all of them and all of them are reliable. i would keep the 870 broken down in my backpack and the mosin with me. i dont live in or near any semi large city so thugs and crazies are no problem. if i had time and money to get my guns it would be something semi auto instead of the slow mosin. i like the m1grand but the clips hare hard to find, the sks is good but i would rather have the power of a SVT. i would trade the .357 for a sig226 or kimber SIS 1911.
how do you think a mosin, 870 and .357 would do for being out in the woods? rate of fire wouldnt matter because its rual ky and most people just have an old 270 for deer.

No black rifles for me. I would take my Henry .22 mag with octagon barrel (or a Winchester 9422M XTR which I have used before but don't have one right now) and several thousand rounds of Winchester 40 gr HP and 40 gr FMJ. I'm more interested in hunting than defense anyways...but the lever action would work for defense if need be, though I would prefer to lay low and hunt meat for food, keep quiet...That would cover all my needs. If I was to have another rifle it would be a .303 Enfield or 7x57 Mauser. If a shotgun, a Remington 870 pump. But the .22 mag would be enough I reckon...I would probably have the Mauser/Enfield and Remmy stashed at my little hole in the hills most of the time most likely and carry the .22 mag day in and day out...

MJ, I agree on the .22 or .22mag lever action.

You probably wouldn't have access to a refrigerator so killing a large animal for meat means a lot would rot before you could eat it.

Sure, you could smoke it but the smoke would also draw attention.

My Winchester 9422 would do fine for me.

Personally, because of space and commonality issues, I'd take a kel-tec carbine and a pistol chambered in the same calibre.
Or maybe the 5.56mm kel-tec carbine?

What would you consider to be the ultimate firearms kit?
On foot is the gotcha. But, we are prepared for that contingency as well.

The wife and I have already outfitted for this. We each have a tactical vest outfitted with dual drop down holster platforms, hydration pack on the back, radio pouch, first aid kit, rifle and pistol magazine pouches, and SOG SEAL knife on the chest. Additional Cold Steel fixed blade and SOG Multi-tool are on the belts, as well.

The pistols for her are Glock 19s in each leg holster and a Glock 17 in the chest holster. Pistols for me are Glock 21s for all three. All the Glocks have Tactical Lights. Each vest, belt, and leg platform will carry a total of 12 extra pistol magazines. She each has an AR15 carbine with nine extra 30 round magazines, and I have an AR10 with 6 extra magazines on the vest. I also have dehydrated food on the back of my vest.

It's a lot to carry, but it's manageable. I don't foresee us having to move fast, so much as stealthy.

We would take a lot of weapons and ammo, because we would not be going back anytime soon. The advantage of different calibers between us is the ability to use what we find, and also to cover hunting as well as defensive use.
