About 10 yrs ago I worked at a car dealership here in Abilene. One of the hispanic guys in the wash bay came to work with his upper lip stitched up. It turns out that he got into an argument and the other guy shot him in the face with a .22 revolver. the bullet went thu his lip, knocked out two teeth, and lodged in the roof of his mouth.
My brother Terry was shot in the back with a .22 and lost his spleen but lived over 15 years with the bullet in his chest with no probs.
It wouldn't be on my list other that to procure food. (I have taken deer with it.)

My personal SHTF kit would include an SKS w\at least 1000 rds., and either a Glock or Springfield XD chambered for 9 mm, 40 S&W, or .45 ACP. I'm not a big fan of the 9mm but you can't deny that it is more readily available, and weighs less than all of the other feasible handgun calibers. I would prefer the 10mm but ammo is too hard to find. The good old .45 ACP is an excellent man-stopper but the ammo weighs around twice what 9mm Luger weighs. In the real world, it will be whatever I have on hand.

This is for grab bag - without going to your safe and getting your FAL/G3/M1 zombie slayer out.

Pred, while I own a 10-22, this deals with a .22 conversion for a glock 19 and a kel-tec sub2k carbine using same G19 magazines.

As mentioned by dogboy, it depends on environment too. In open areas such as where you live, I'd rather take my M4 with the grendel upper than anything else.
But I live in Atlanta, that is very crowded and it is rare that you get to see more than 100 yards without some obstructions such as trees. When you go deer hunting down here, you almost never see a Deer past 80 yards. It is really easy to evade in the bush here in N. GA. The G19 is almost always on me and the kel-tec is almost always in the truck, so it makes for a handy combo - the .22 conversion is entirely for foraging small game and birds.

So yes, the .223 and .308's are more powerful, without a doubt, and I would rather carry one of those, but I also have to think about my family - I have to carry supplies for them as well. Here in the mountains, a 9mm carbine with a couple hundred rounds would go a long way.

.243 Remington 700 with 3-9x scope for long shots here in Texas. 700 rounds on bandoliers. (for man stopper)
.22 Ruger MkII with 3 clips and about 700 rounds of ammo. (for small game.)

Here In texas, I know my area liek the back of my hand. So If I need to evade, I know trails, water sources, location of game, etc. And seriously if I was trying to resist, I would kill the officers, not the average enlisted man. It's harder to recruit an officer than an enlisted man.

Don't forget to pack a few rubbers and rubber bands in your pocket so you can cover up the breech of your AR's and AK's. Keeping your barrel soot-free can be a life-saver in an emergency situation.

They can also be easily pre-packed into the grip or stock compartment.

That is a tough choice when you own as many choices As I do,Lol...
On foot only, my choice would be to dress in my BDU's and take the AR-15 with a rucksack full of loaded mags, Colt 1911 .45 on my right hip, Kimber .45 with night sights in left shoulder holster, and 8-10 spare loaded mags, a Good knife and a canteen.
With them I can get anything else I need !

I would take something that could take a beating and keep going. A Kel Tec carbine just wouldn't do for me, wnd while not expecting long range shots, I would at least want good penetration and range. If I had space for mag pouches I would take an AK and/or G3.

If I didn't have space for mag pouches, just ammo with or without stripper clips, I would take an SKS and/or bolt action in 308 or 30-06.

My short range needs would be covered with reliable handguns, either 40 or 45 caliber, or 357/38 if it was a revolver.

The .243 I mentioned above is a youth model, so it's very short and compact. I could sling that over my shoulder and grab the old 870 with slugs for medium range firefights.

The shotgun is the best and most versatile option and where I live in OK, you don't get shots that are too far out. Besides all that, it is very forgiving if you have to take a quick shot.

Lets see my Ruger 45 for the vest,my taurus 9mm for the side mount,
my 25 auto for the ancle,my dr200 .223 and my feather 9mm
The feather is light weight and very easy to hide and carry the heavest one is the dr200 which i would stash untill needed but i would keep it close as possible,

If I am at home when the SHTF, then I will pull out of the safe my M-1 Garand, 1911 .45 and whatever else I think I may need.

If I am at work and need to get home and can’t use my truck to get home due to EMP or gridlocked traffic, then the story changes considerably.

I like the idea of a small, non-military looking rifle. I don’t want to be arrested by whatever law may remain for carrying something that looks too nasty. I also like the idea of a common caliber for rifle and pistol that keeps the weight down.

I have found what I think may be an optimum for me: a Marlin 1894C .357, an S&W 627 .357 and a Ruger MK II Comp. The Marlin has a Williams Foolproof receiver sight, the 627 has Pachmayr Presentation grips, and the MK II has an Ultradot LT red dot on it. The MK II with the red dot is a substitute .22 rifle for food gathering. I will use these plus the contents of my truck bag to get home. The .357 rifle and handgun should take care of any problem that requires a gun. Are they the optimum. Probably not. But from the standpoint of weight, bulk, power, shootability, I think they will work.

I am limited to hunting firearms so if I had to leave home I would take a centerfire rifle, 12 ga. shotgun, concealed pistol and my buck general knife. Maybe fr freak.radio, handheld cb radio.

It would of course depend on the situation. How far you are going to bug to and transportaiton. Worse case - home undefenseable - on foot- little time, I would take all I could as many trips as I could to stash (yes I know this wouldn't work well in the city). Bottom line on the hoof I would have to go with my Mill Pro 9mm pistol and Hi-Point carbine, sks and as much ammo as physically possible in ammo vest and pack. Small survival kit w/ water purifiacation capabilities. Hide, evade, sneak and procure, find shelter and repeat. Do not forget the all important 3's. No food 3 weeks, No water 3 days, No air 3 minutes......Jim
