I would take my .243 varmint rifle (rem 700 sps varmint) for med range sniping, with a few different reloads, and my .40 pistol for CQ, My problem with both weapons being same caliber is you have to depend on finding that one caliber. With 2 popular calibers your chances of finding ammo doubled. If one is thinking of a SHTF scenario then when you are target shooting I would recomend shooting your weapon choices in unconventional scenarios, stances and ranges just in case you can only resupply one caliber. Luckily my dad lives up the street from me. I know his answer... Marlin 336 in 30/30 and his .357 mag. handgun. Our chances of finding compatible ammo just doubled again. With both of us prior military we should be alright. Anybody serious of a SHTF scenario should have a plan with others. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Select a rally point, secondary rally point, maybe a third rally point and each individual is responsible for own supplies(in case someone doesn't survive to rally point). Then each person is assigned to bring surplus of different rations ie water, fuel, blankets, batteries, canned goods, medical supplies, etc. I can't afford to buy everything. I know I'm getting off the point here but it's something to think about. A small army of friends/family is better than one person with a small arsenal. If the apocolyps occurs in our lifetime you or I probably will not survive it alone.

After Hurricane Katrina, the November 2005 Gun Tests asked the following question of its readers: "What would you take if you had to choose just one gun, stuff it into a packed automobile, and hit the road with a couple million of your new best friends?" The best responses to that question were printed in the January and February 2006 "Firing Line" columns.

Many responses insisted on at least two weapons, most often a .45 ACP of some sort plus a rifle, or a 9mm pistol and a rifle of some kind. Many demanded a pistol - carbine combo that shared ammunition. But of the people who stuck to the rule of one weapon, these are the ones that seemed to show up most often.

A .22 rifle of some kind; an AK-47; the M-1 carbine; a short barreled 12-gauge pump shotgun; the AR-15; the M1911A1; and Marlin or Winchester lever actions, usually chambered for .357 Magnum.

When you consider a firearm for your emergency kit, there are factors to be balanced. They are utility, portability, reliability, ammunition availability, and lethality. This balance varies from person to person depending on experience and perceived needs in an emergency. There is also the fact that in most places there are few to no restrictions on ownership and carriage of rifles, carbines and shotguns. These facts make a longarm of some kind the practical choice.

My personal choice for my Grab & Go knapsack is a Henry AR-7 .22 Survival Rifle. It is equipped with a sling (a universal rifle sling plus Uncle Mike's Shotgun Sling kit for a 20-gauge), six 7-round magazines and 300 rounds of 40 grain hypervelocity ammunition. Total weight is less than 6 pounds including the ammunition.

Some people mock the .22 as a survival weapon, but think about it for a minute. That round will take small game, sitting or standing game birds, and even deer if you can stalk close enough. As far as using it against two-legged predators, consider: the .22 LR round is the cartridge of choice for underworld assassins. If you can use a rifle like a rifle and not like a shotgun, hypervelocity rounds have enough energy to kill a man at 100 meters with a head shot. Also, the .22 LR cartridge is available everywhere, a real plus if you are in a true survival situation.

However, as I keep telling my friends (and feeling like Cassandra a lot of the time when trying to explain to them why keeping a personal emergency kit at work or in your car is so important), survival is an art, not a science. Each person must do and choose what works for them. Just don't insist your choices are the perfect ones for everybody.

Bosnian and Chechen snipers used the .22 to kill people from like 100y. head and neck shots. so yes it can take people down.

What in the hell are you going to do with that, SKS?

As of right now, I'd bring my Smithy 9mm w/ leg holster, my 870, and my Savage 7 Mag. I have yet to build my short barrel SKS w/TAPCO Stock, but when I do, I will bring that in place of the 870 and 7 Mag.
If I could bring a vehicle/ATV, I would add my 870, and my Savage 7mm Mag.

At all times, my tactical vest is loaded with two-way radios (24 mile range), 5 loaded clips for the 9mm, 2 boxes of ammo for the 9mm, 20 slugs and 20 buckshot rounds in a built-in waist bandolier for my 870, 2 boxes of ammo for my 7 Mag, a KA-BAR, good binoculars, some radiation tablets (purely to provide a false sense of security), a pocket bible, canteen, water purification tablets, and a pretty extensive compact first-aid kit. It took some trial-and-error to find the vest that would let me carry all this comfortably, and still allow for full-movement, but I found one on Sportsmans Guide. It's British surplus, and fits snugly. It doesn't bounce around, and has hooks that allow me to attach an ALICE pack to it.

In each of the two identical ALICE packs I keep loaded, I have a lightweight waterproof tent, 2 person sleeping bag, water purification pump, MRE's, clothing articles, ect, to last the family for a while. I only keep stuff in the ALICE packs that I could get by without if I had to ditch them.

It seems like a lot of weight, but I frequently wear my vest and one of the ALICE's when I go squirrel hunting on my buddies land, which is about every weekend. Also, the family would share the weight. I can keep a decent mile time wearing this stuff. I hate seeming paranoid, but I find a strange comfort in knowing that this stuff is always sitting in my garage. Let them call me crazy ...

As far as where I'll head to, I've been considering Northwest Arkansas, where there's a whole lot of nothing, or the land my uncle owns just on the other side of the AR-TN border.

Go light but not TOO light

The original Post said if you were on foot, so:

1. My NEF Survivor 12 Guage (have survival supplies in the stock, and 9 rounds on board)
2. Already have the Glock 23 and 2 spare mags ON me, so an extra box of 40 S&W for that.
3. The Bug Out Bag that's already in my car

If I can make it home to gather more gear, I can get out in a vehicle so then the inventory gets MUCH better.

This is an interesting topic, I guess it’s good to ponder questions like these occasionally. Living in the area I do Fairbank’s Alaska I can’t help but think that Im in a place where it will drop to -50 below F and stay there for weeks on end at anytime for about 7 months every year. No one here will survive without a very well organized militia and community I’d try to organize with my neighbors and protect the homestead as long as possible. Guns have to be simple, I’ve heard of numerous guns freezing up and not firing at all in such temperature’s gun oil turns to frozen muck and most times the firing pin never strikes the primer because it’s frozen in place. In WW2 In Stalin Grad Russia The Germans and Russians fought in temperatures comparable to these, the killer was the climate and mal nutrition more then anything else. Russian soldiers mixed gasoline with gun oil with some success to make their bolt action rifles somewhat operable....I don’t see any semi auto’s really functioning with any consistency at all... just my opinion. For this area I’d choose my 30-06 bolt action for available ammo and in the wild it will protect against more then people we have brown bear black bear and I can go on and on about wildlife I’d be concerned with. 100rds of Ammo should hold for a few months. In my pack id have wire and fishing line I would make rabbit snares and other snares with the wire and fishing line and fish as well. as Id probably take a long Barrel 22 pistol and a few hundred rounds of ammo stealth would be key in survival as I would not be equipped for a gunfight. Anywhere warm climate I’d choose my AR10 a few hundred rounds and a long Barrel 22 pistol. Remember the outlaws of the old west with the exception of a few.... most either died of exposure, disease are simply turned themselves in to face the gallows rather then starve are freeze to death in the woods. when your on the run or escaping detection you cant afford to build a nice shelter and sit still by the fire even if you could.... sooner are later you’ll need medicine or other supplies .

Alaskan, I've heard about the oil in guns freezing up in extreme cold. Don't they remove most of the lube and leave the gun outside the cabin so it doesn't freeze up from the temperature change you would normally have from inside to outside?

Makes me shiver just thinking about trying to survive in extreme cold.

My turkey carving knife, some rope, and a ghillie suit. Manpower would cover for everything else.
I just realized that we all live in different places, so our choices would be different. I live in Maui, which is covered in industrial on the western side, and jungle in the east. I'd probably head east.

SKS most likely.

Relativly lightweight, but still has good range.

Or a Hi-Point 9mm, idk why, they just look cool :P
