So, I would probably take either my Springfield 30-06 (which is a heavy gun with heavy ammo), or, my SKS. The SKS carries a bit better than the big 30-06, and the ammo is also lighter. I am also a very decent shot with the gun. The only thing that would stop me from carrying it in the woods is how quickly it could stop an animal like a grizzly. Shot placement would be critical, and I think I could hit it in the head, but missing and making a neck or shoulder shot could be a disaster.
Reckon it might not be a good idea to shoot Griz in the head?? Reckon it might actually be better to shoot it in the neck or shoulder (of the choices you gave) ??

Dont they have really small brains inside a sort of cambered skull that could cause a ricochet, making a head shot iffy? Now if it was on a "grizzly island" I'm going with the slug gun.

I'd have to go with a 12ga shotgun. Subsistence doesn't seem to be the issue in this scenario as much as defense. Even so, you can take a small animal with shotshells, medium sized ones with buck shot, and the biggest with slugs. I'd pick a medium length barrel with an adjustable choke.
Can you kill a rabbit at 150 yards with a shotgun ???
I can shoot a rabbit at 150 in the head with ball ammo and still have dinner !
( and no shot to pick out of my teeth !) LOL

I would have to go with the 870. Shotguns are just too dang versatile. They can take anything you can name. Besides, they are intimidating. Also, remember small game are going to be more likely in a true survival situation then large. Remember large game has to be preserved. In fact when people were first settling North America, shotguns were among the most advised equipment .

What are you all going to do with a 870 when a bear decides it wants the food you've been cooking?

give the food to it. if he wants it he can have it. fisherman do it everyday.

and if a large bear is that close you are in BIG trouble anyway

I guess. To me a shotgun as your ONLY SHTF weapon doesn't make much sense. IMHO of course.

as far as feeding yourself ,i doubt if i would use over a box of shells in that month. and animals arent going to be waiting to ambush you.

i live around bears. in the summer a sow walks through my yard every night. and its not very scary.

If I was really hungry and Papa Bear came and tried to jack me up I'd let him eat slugs from my 870 and I would eat bear steak.

Of all the guns I have right now I'd have to pick my G3. Accurate enough for any head shot, 300+ yard range, and powerful enough to take anything down I'd find around here.

Yeah, I think you guys are right about the bear head shot. Never shot a bear, so I really don't know how their skulls are built. That makes me want to think twice about an SKS...I love the gun because when I squeeze the trigger, there is a 99.9999% chance that the round will go off, and another will load correctly. But, the odds of taking a big bear with an SKS? ..I'm sure it's possible, but I don't think I'd go looking for the bear. Then again, if you're in the middle of nowhere, it might not be a good idea to go looking for a bear anyway.

My first 7-1/2 foot Grizzly kill was made with a Remington 742 in 30/06. I shot him Right between the eyes 2 inches high with a 180 gr. core-lokt... He went down like a rock and when I skinned him out his skull was shattered into pieces and I still have all the pieces in a bucket in storage. Someday I may try to re-assemble the skull jigsaw puzzle...So, a well placed shot in the head works fine for me, also shooting in the ear cavity will jello the brains fast!

I definately believe you. But, my first encounter was outside of Fairbanks, 30 years ago. A frontal headshot, in the same place as your shot, glanced off. When I hit him again in the left shoulder and got him on the ground and finally dead, there was a strip of hide missing from his forehead. I was shooting a .338 Winchester Magnum. There are exceptions to every rule. But, if I wasn't hunting him and he wasn't bothering me, I would leave him alone. I'd still take the 870 and said ammo, above everything.
