| Senior Member | Hurricane Season That time of year is fast approaching, thought I'd take this opportunity to to go over what I have and what you have. I might see something on your list that I need. The basics: Food and water for three days at least!! What we have: We keep at least 6 months worth of food a 100 gallon water bladder and a Katadyne water purifier. (we have a canal behind the house) Fuel for the generator for 1 month, add preservative and at end of season use in your vehicle or mower. Lights: We have propane lanterns and regular flashlights but we also have the shaker lights and dynamo lights. Also a good idea are Tap Lights you can buy them at the dollar store, we place them in the hallways and in each room, as you walk by just tap them on. Cooking, buy a Coleman propane stove for around $40 and keep a few quart size propane bottle on hand. Medication, make sure to get a 90 day prescription if you can. Pets: have food and treats for them, many dogs and cats get anxious during the storms. Entertainment: Dynamo Radio, plenty of books and boardgames, and a small t.v. that can run off batteries or the generator. Transportation: Make sure your vehicle can get you out if it comes to that. Does your area flood, does your vehicle have enough clearance? Protection: I wish I didn't need this section, unfortunately the scum of our society tend to use disasters as an opportunity to loot and hurt innocent people. During Andrew in '92 I had to help a friend defend his business from looters. The site of two overweight Cubans with Mini-14's and a pair of large Rottwiellers discouraged the would be looters. Currently my Wife and I have plenty of firepower and two 90 pound dogs. I know I've left out a million and one things but if you have the basics you should be OK and not need to stand in distribution lines for hours every day. Here's the FEMA site for hurricanes.
