BRG3, I found this article about the .327 Federal. Looks to be a good cartridge that will become history just like the .32H&R and the 9mm Federal, jmho. The New .327 Federal Magnum in Ruger’s SP101 Compact Six-Shot Revolver |

Marlin has not made it just yet. I don't want to mislead you. I expect they will once Ruger starts selling guns in 327. The new issue of Shooting Times has an article on the 327. I really didn't think much of the new caliber at first as I thought "why bother", but it offers some significant advantages to the 32 mag and it had more muzzle energy than the 38spl+P. A Marlin offering would only make sense since they offer the 1894 in 357, 41 mag and 44 mag now. I'm a 41 mag fan in case you have not seen me on the other forums. As an aside, I got a Merry Chistmas email from this forum and logged in. I hadn't even posted a single time since 2005 and forgot all about it. Changed that. The forum is bookmarked now and I will be a regular. Last edited by 22-rimfire; 12-21-2007 at 11:03 PM. |

If I have a shoulder fired weapon, I want the power of a rifle. I am not big on PCC's for serious uses.

On one had if you like these calibers they will be more accurate (so will you) in a carbine than in a short handgun barrel. On the other hand, they are underpowered for what you could really have with a carbine. Personally, it is a matter of what you choose. For me, I would not choose a carbine in a handgun caliber but that is me and I know others in this forum will disagree. |

I have owned and used 2 handgun/revolver combos over the years and I think they are a good idea. The first I had was a marlin 1894c in .357 mag that I used with a ruger police service six and a ruger blackhawk. Both handguns were excellent but I never could get better than 5-6" groups at 50 yards with the carbine. I know It must just have been a lemon, every other marlin I have ever owned has been very accurate. Luck of the draw I guess. The second combo , the one I am using now, ( and will keep using until they or I wear out0 is a winchester trapper .357 with the same blackhawk and a ruger sp101. The winchester is very accurate for a carbine and has taken several deer, coyote, coon, rabbit, feral dogs ect and I am comfortable with it out to about 100-125 yards but it is at its best at under 100 yards. It really depends on what you plan on using it for and the terrain you plan on using it in. When I lived in the southern nevada desert, it didnt really make much sense, (except for a small game gun) because any defense situation that would develop would most likely be out of the weapons effective range. It would really suck to have someone shooting at you with a 06 or something from several hundred yards away in open flat terrain and only be able to lob some .357's in there general direction. But..... once I moved to the ozarks, with its hilly tree covered terrain, the .357 combo becomes much more viable. Hunting here if you try very hard is usually an under 100 yard mostly under 75 yard proposition. If you keep to cover, any contact with an aggressor would be much closer also. So it makes more sense. NO I am NOT advocating the carbine as a battle implement., but as a everyday truck gun, along with your carry side arm it will take care of most of your daily farm chores, hunting duties and defend you in a pinch. It is much lighter, more compact and is easier to carry in a vehicle than most rifles and wont freak out law enforcement or most people (excluding rabid anti-gunners of course) if they see it in your vehicle. I have been using mine for 1994 and I have no complaints, but when I am expecting longer shots or trouble, I grab a rifle instead. |
