Cold steel, great idea... Is it Billy or NRAJOE that collects knives. That's a good back up, some sharp, cold steel.

I think 1-2 thousand rounds would be enough stockpiled. If you need more than that it will be because you have enemies, in which case other weapons and ammo would be collected from the dead.

Very Informative I'll have to remember this thread if I ever get a Muzzleloader.

foggynoose is right, I have seen home made black powder made and fired several loads of it successfully. though it may very in strenght due to inconsistancies in ingrediants and processing it is not hard to make and doesn't require a degree in chemistry. after all it was being made by less sophisticated people then us hundreds and even thousands of years ago. My question is what are you going to be doing all that shooting at? I have several 1000 rounds for my 22s and a couple 1000 7.62x39 and hundreds and hundreds of shot gun shells pistol ammo, 243, 300 etc( I buy a few boxes of something or other each week) I picture most of us probably buy ammo like that too. I cannot picture any SHTF situation that I would live though anyway happening that would exhast all of that ammo. if I were just using it for food procurment and self defence I would think a couple 1000 rounds would last a lifetime. unless you are planning to have your own personal war with the world.

By the way foggy you should try making some of your own charcoal to use for fun my buddy uses green willow wood with no bark and we put it in a steel ammo can with a hole drilled in the top. throw that on your fire until the smoke stops coming out of the hole. once it cools open it up and you have some good pure charcoal.

Andrew, I've been looking into that option as well. All my reloading to date has been done with already manufactured components. Also, when I buy more items to reload I buy a couple extra of this and that to set aside for time of scarcity or emergency. With prices of reloading materials going up like they have this past year, buying a couple extra to avoid higher prices in the near future is a regular shopping practice now. As an example, Hornady 139gr. SST bullets jumped from $17.95 to $23.95 a box in a couple weeks time from a local supplier.

In answer to your question Idaho Dave, from a personal perspective... My wife and I enjoy shooting on a weekly basis, sometimes more frequently when I've loaded up a new batch. Buying in bulk affords us the opportunity to shoot in bulk if we'd like, as long as component prices don't get too high. And, I'm from southern Idaho. (...humor from an earlier time when northern Idaho was known for some residents that were doing such.) We aren't preparing for war down here, just enjoying an active and fun family hobby.

If you run out of ammo, learn to fish.

I would have the trotlines baited while I was hunting.... I have much more confidence in my fishing skills than hunting.

Idaho Dave, there's a sure fire way to get some food to the table, along with the fish... However, I know very little about trapping.

Idaho Dave, are you in the north of Idaho?
