Yea, he mentioned the canned deer/elk does last much longer...but I didn't want to rile up any food safety folks that may have been reading our post.

He tested some that had been on the shelf seven years and it was as good as day one when canned.

He even got a vegetarian friend interested in it, because of the appealing aroma when it's being warmed up for a meal, and the friend gave in and tried a bite. After the bite the friend had a serving, and wanted more.

Well it's how it's canned. That makes the difference. I know that stuff smells really good! I finally got me a deer this season, during modern gun season. I usually make it into jerky and frozen steaks. But maybe next year i'll can some.

I would suggest 3 mos of everything your going to need, plus three months rent, utilities, gas, ammo, gasoline, medicine, something to make generate power with, some how to heat water if there is any. What if paper money is worthless? [Coins, gold, silver] Most people will not fare as well, they will be having to go to food lines at your local stadiums, [Katrina] giving up whatever or whoever they have for food. Then you deal with the thugs cause the cops have split. Gas masks, water filters, Potassium Iadate Do you think you have enough? Will there be mail? Cell phones. Internet? GPS? They can turn it all off due to Executive Orders. The Local food plant and other stores will probably be guarded by uhh .. "Contractors". We know what they do. The best protection is a Prudent place Far away from the chaos. Life will find a way.

Dunno if this has already been mentioned as I did not take the time to read the whole thing. But I would not suggest using distilled water. It lacks some basic essentials of regular drinking water. (Can't remember what) But it can actually cause you to become dehydrated if you are too active while drinking it.

+1 on the canned venison. In my neck of the woods it's pretty common to can deer, moose, hare, salmon, and numerous crustaceans. The meat, if done properly, will certainly last for years.

I also purchase 5gal food grade buckets at my local co-op. Stored are a couple of buckets of skim milk powder, two buckets of dried assorted soups, a bucket of oatmeal, two buckets of rice, a bucket of assorted spices just to name a few. It's a work in progress with a new bucket being added every couple of months. My water is stored as well and is rotated every six months.

This preparedness game can be taxing on the pocketbook. I try to choose food items that have nutritional value but yet can be stored for years....that pretty much eliminates canned goods. I have a bucket of dry pasta stored....it's been in my basement for a year and a half....I'm thinking I might try a bag to make sure it still tastes fresh. If so, I'll add another bucket.

Something to think about. If everyone is out hunting. How long do you think the game in your area will last?

If you deplete the game around your position, how far out will you go to find more?

You starve on just rabbits. the meat is too lean.

Talk to people in Las Vegas Area, they are gong to Mt Charleston and hunt deer. 2,000,000,000 plus people maybe 50 deer????

Southern Ca area. Are you going to leave LA and go where? San Deigo??

Get a plan, think it out, modifity it as you learn.
