| Senior Member | [quote=GlockMeister;439803]Well in reference to Katrina, as you brought it up, it's in my opinion part of the reason for the delay, getting help in there, was due to lack of communication. If you can't communicate, where do you send it first of all. But, most knew what, 2-3 days in advance, to leave? I truly believe most that stayed thought they'd do a little looting while people were gone. My opinion. Some I'm sure stayed to protect their stuff/property from those people. While others, maybe couldn't leave. It also fell to crap because when they did get help, the help was more concerned, in my mind, of disarming them before anything else. I could be wrong. I also heard the NOPD, just kind of threw the doors to the jail open and told them in it to just leave. Like I'd want to be disarmed knowing that right? That's about right with the delay. South louisiana and MS both had heavily wooded road ways, and after Katrina you couldn't even drive down the interstate because it was covered in pine trees. It was 2days after the storm when my family decided to leav our get away place in TX and come back to MS. We made the trip fine till we got north of Picayune on I-59 and it was horrible, Road crews were steadily cutting away at the trees, but it was a mess. We eventually got behind a army hummer who was heading North in the south bound lane and followed him until we got back to our exit.. Lots of people we knew were completely un prepared and didn't even have enough gas to get out of town. Luckily my family was prepared and we were able to help out most of the less fourtnate people we knew by giving them gas, cooking for them, or anything else we could do. My fiancee's parents were the type to stay at their property to make sure nothing was stolen. They are luck to be alive imo. Had sever huge trees fall all around their house but none did any damage. Belongings can be replaced, but lives can't so i got out of town. The gun grab thing was just ridicolous. It's amazing how living so close to NO i never even heard of it after the storm.. |

| Senior Member | Stitchclimber, I have never met any militia group such as you describe. If there is such I'm sure they could do a lot of good for people in an emergency situation. But please do me the favor of checking them out throughly before putting yourself under their control. We don't want any of our good G&G people hurt.

| Senior Member | Did the Militia Act of like 1908 (or 1906 or whenever it was) ban all state militias and replaced them with the National Guard? I am just asking this because if SHTF, no miltia would have any right over the government or military or the national guard. Also, I wouldn't want to be around when sheeple start getting herded into drinking the cool-aid or doing something idiotic and getting them self killed, or thrown in prison. The individual is smart, the mob is and the masses are not. I think if there is anything that natural disaster or any other type of SHTF or SNAFU situation is that you can't trust anyone. I'd say just keep the ones you know you can trust, the elite few people you really can truly trust around you, and try to survive. Also if SHTF what is stopping another bigger group from just taking over yours? You can't just go out and help people and expect you will have the same treatment returned. You might end up robbed or dead by other groups that have gone bandit. My advice is get out of civilization and find a safe place to hold out, but don't get too comfy because that safe place may not be safe forever. Remember no place is safe, only safer. |

| Senior Member | Sorry, I should have worded that differently, my fault. They are no longer recognized by the Government, and the National Guard is what is. Even forming a Militia doesn't mean anything, since as citizens you have the right to assemble. You start doing stuff the government doesn't like I bet they'd shut you down. I couldn't find any modern militias in my state via a google search |

| Senior Member | Excuse me TEXAS does have an Official States Militia! Look it up, duely organized, authorized and funded under the Texas State Constituition! You my friend have too much of the wild eyed media depiction of militias running about yer noggin. And as a matter of course at the least the Texas State Militia is (or at least was ) recognized as they were invited to the All Navy East Coast Matches in as late as I have personal knowledge as 1985!

| Senior Member | tlarkin, It appears the Militia Act of 1903 affected the "organized militias" of the states, federalizing them into the National Guard. This does not apply to what is known as the "unorganized militia" of the United States under US Code: ![]()

| Senior Member | There is a militia here in NC that seems to be "normal" they set up at most gun shows in the area and dont act like weirdo's but I dont know. In my line of work if I joined any Militia good bad or what ever I would be marked and never win a case in court again. can you imagine the stero-type a defense lawyer would put on an law enforcement officer if he heard about his/her membership in a militia? yep Ill just stick to myself and a few friends and family that think along the same lines of me.. wait is that a militia a group of people with guns.. crud I am in one already..
