| Emergency Bag Articles This has been niggling at the back of my brain for awhile. Starting after Hurricane Katrina, I started doing something about survival in my current circumstances. People were interested enough in what I had to say on the subject that I sat down and wrote three articles on the topic of emergency kits, bug-out bags, grab & go bags, call them what you will. Those that read them said they offer food for thought (which I took to mean they were interested in what I had to say but were too lazy to do anything with the information). I found this site and discovered there are other people who think along the same lines I have, many even farther (their circumstances being much more favorable than mine). Still, we get a lot of newbies to the subject looking for information, and both we and they seem to spend a lot of time reinventing the wheel. And that brings me back to the preceding paragraph. The kit I postulate (and have built several of, for myself, family members and friends) has as its primary objective keeping you going on foot for three to five days to get out of a disaster area; or to get home from a city following a 9/11 type attack. The secondary objective is to permit you to survive for longer than that (though not indefinitely alone) in the field at any time of the year. As I say more than once in the articles, survival is an art, not a science. The articles are too long to post here. The topics are: The Personal Emergency Kit, or How Not to Get Caught By Surprise In An Emergency; Stocking Your Grab & Go Bag, Or Building A Kit Without Going Bankrupt; and Firearms As Part of Your Emergency Kit. So, if you would like to read the articles, email me off-forum, include your email address, and I will send you a reply with the articles attached. You can take from them what you will. They are how I see the situation(s) I've planned for. The rest, and their worth, is up to you. Last edited by Cyrano; 03-13-2008 at 08:57 AM. |
