How would the M-14 or M1 Garand measure up to the FN .303? Springfield Armory makes an M-14 modified to single fire only. I think they call it the M1-A1. I saw it at my local gun store/range but it didn't have a bayonet lug. What happened to it. Is it available?

What you are talking about is the Springfield Armory, Inc. M1A.

They stopped putting bayonet lugs on the flash-hider after the Clinton Assault Weapons Ban and never started putting them back on after the ban sun-setted within the last few years. I got a new flash-hider, with the bayonet lug from Fulton Armory for about 50 or 60 bucks I think. They even have the bayonets there too, if you want one. Make sure you get the flash-hider castle-nut pliers as well, otherwise it is a pain in the pecker to get that pesky flash hider on and off, you might end up ruining your castle nut and the finish as well without it. That little set of pliers makes the whole process easier!

Here is Fulton's website: http://www.fulton-armory.com/
Just scroll down and click on M-14 parts and accessories, scroll through there 'til you find what you need.

My current favorite weapon in the home arsenal!

Cyrano and Team:
You guys have a dynamite topic here.
Excellent condensed info, especially for a relative novice.

'The assault rifle was invented for two reasons: to simplify logistics by eliminating two or three different weapons, of often differing calibers (sub-machine gun, rifle and carbine) in the mission of supporting the MG, and to provide a more flexible weapon that would reduce the need for the MG.'

Except that the reason we have the M16 is because the USAF Security Forces had them in Viet Nam. The South Vietnamese liked'm because they were very light and easy to carry. South Viet Man began requesting/ordering them by the boat load. Shortly there after they were also given to US Troops likely to standardize weapons. I've never talked to any Vet with Combat experience in Viet Nam who wanted the M16 over the M14.
Now someone may correct me because I AM NOT A VET. All my experience is as a LOE.
