When society ails will you be ready?

If there was a natural disaster and plbic services were all but destroyed would you be ready to fend for yourself? When hurrican Katrina (storm not the girl friend) society for that area collasped on itself and recognized no symbols of authority. If something on that scale occured in the united states, how long would it take for those dependent on welfare, disability, food stamps and government services come after your resources. The first thing to be looted will be the stores and then of course food sources. However, when those run out they will come after you.

1. do you have rations set aside?
2. lots of ammo and rifle assortments?
3. water not dependent on city (well water)
4. live in a defensible position.

my question. what I am I missing? I know other poeple have thought about this, what else is there to consider?

I am going to fort up at my residence, I guess we will never have plenty of everything, but we will stay at home. If they come to take what I have they are going to make a grave mistake, then I will take what they have.

It's really important that you have a group of people who will work with you. They don't even need to be 'survival' people, just neighbors who'll help each other out.
You need someone to watch your back in every situation.

I think that most of us here are prepared as best we can be, and we have talked about this quite extensively in previous threads. Looters will be told in no uncertain terms to leave the neighborhood.

Merely told? Looters will be shot in my neighborhood. Step foot on my property with nefarious intent... and those will meet Mr. 168. Heck, that round might not even come from my house...

Well if all else fails...and no food is to be found..
My Dad tells me of venturing into "town" while in Vietnam, he enjoyed "meat on a stick" The meat was dog, he knew it when he bought it, and said the best dog meat came from Black Dogs....I have 2..

You wanna do what to me?

Some of us are in less enviable positions - I'm in a neighborhood too close to town, right off the highway, on city water and an 'all-electric' house.
Luckily, the National Forest is my 'backyard'.
Got water, food, ammo and cooking fuel stored.
Enough gas for a couple months with the bike, or a month with the car.
Ah well, I'll stay in place as long as possible, then make my way south of town to where some buddies are better set up - add my resources to theirs for mutual defense. Depends on how long the 'Emergency' is, and how serious the Looters get - I have only so much room for burials.....

It will be somewhat like living in the 1800s. You will have to make do with what you have and help like minded people when you can.

EXACTLY. A national forest. most looters have no ideas about the great outdoors and can be easily lured in and dealt with. They would follow a bear into the woods anyway. But yes a forest can be the same as a fortified castle.

Florida, being Hurricane Prone, has the Castle Doctrine. Of course, when it's just you & a looter, whoever survives get to tell the tale of "who felt the most threatened".

If society has broken down after a SHTF (like a really bad Cat-5 hurricane), you are on your own. Feed the dead looters to your dogs...just field dress 'em like a deer. Then dispose of the bones, some of which the dogs will take care of, the rest you just find a nice plot for...

If you have looters, law has broken down. You can deal with 'em the NICE way, or the Not-So-Nice way. New Orleans had lots of shootings after Katrina, I don't remember any home-owners being tried for defending their homes afterwards.

1. do you have rations set aside? 12 cases of MRE's.
2. lots of ammo and rifle assortments? Undoubtedly.
3. water not dependent on city (well water) We have our own well and three ponds.
4. live in a defensible position. Easily... as well as a bug-out plan & location.

I will add the following questions:

5. Do you have enough medical supplies?
6. Do you have necessary prescriptions?
7. Do you have hygiene items?

... obviously, a shelter in place is best because you have most of the above items. Secondly, IF you have to bug out, is there anything prepositioned at a secondary location?

The only real worry I'd have is water. This is a drought prone area. So far this year I have officialy only gotten 3.75 inches of rain. I do know where a couple of seeps are, they run even in the worst of droughts. I guess the good thing is that most people don't want to come here when it gets dry. The bad thing is that I live between San Antonio and Mexico. I kinda think that about a million Mexicans will be headed home through this area.

nah, the Mex-Pacs will be headed INTO the US...their whole plan is to take back all the states they lost from bad land deals in the 1700-1800's by swarming in those states until they get a majority, then they'll vote to become part of Mexico again!
