Heh I wondered the same thing. At my aveage MPG is in the low-mid 20s. I never let the tank drop more than like 3 gallons from full (its a 10gal tank). I top it off with one of my gas cans, and then refill the gas can next time I go out. I have 11 gallons worth of gas in cans, so total I have a minimum of 18 gallons of gas, for about 400 miles. My bug out location is about 45 miles away by road, so at the worst I should use like 100 miles worth of gas (if I have to constantly stay off the road to avoid traffic or whatever). I also have stuff I can siphon with if I really need to.
Other than that, I'd be walking! I hope they are slow zombies!

I can make it there (taking the longest route) on less than 13 gallons.. The h3 holds 23 gallons and I never let it go below half. If I foresee that gas will not be available I will use my last tank to get me the heck outta dodge!
Once I'm there, my planning will have my family in a position to sustain itself without needing gasoline.. However it would be nice to maybe have a still and rig a couple ol' 4 wheelers to run off the alcohol and use those for scouting.
So to answer your question, I don't plan on continuously fueling my "big rig bug out vehicle".

Hey if fuel was not an issue this would be fun to have. I have seen The Alaska National Guard using these.
The below link is a youtube video of it. Safety One International, Hagglunds BV206 Snowcat Tracks by Camoplast
I knew a guy back when I was about 17, im about 23 now, who bought one of these and it blew my mind away what it could do.

that Hagglunds is an awesome little vehicle, i wonder if it can be re-enforced with some sort of ballistics armour, glass and body. might cut back the hauling weight. but i like, i wonder how deep they can go out in to the water? would they float enough to cross a lake?

Im not sure if they float well, but I do know that the trailer that is behind is also powered by a shaft that helps connect them so the trailer propels itself and isnt "pulled" they are awsome lil rigs.

If I had my choice, it would be the military's newest transportation vehicle- the mrap.
*They are completely sealed and provide a continuous clean air supply in the event of chemical war fare. ( that feature is also nice when your cruizin the streets here in Iraq, you cant smell anything from outside)
* Bullet proof up to a 50 cal and resist explosions
* They have built in power converters that supply power to numerous 110volt outlets located throughout the vehicle.
* On board air compressor - I ran 2 nail guns full bore on one of our job sites the other day with no problems
* Gunners Turret
* Infra-red cameras for driving at night
I could go on for days

I could go on for days | Here's the Mrap for those that haven't seen it yet. They were shipping them through here and GA a while back. I saw 10's of dozens of them piggy backing big rigs everyday there for a few months. Or at least they were similar. Don't specifically remember the gunner turrets. |

Unarmored, I would have to go with a early 90's Toyota Hilux or 4Runner. Maybe even as late as the Pre 2k's. A buddy of mine has one and if you know how to drive it, there is no where it can't go. Then if you get talking a lift and reinforced axles + tranny for bigger tires and clearance, you're looking at one mean offroad vehicle.
I could also see an old Jeep Cherokee. Raised up, they are the same as the toyota.
Armored, I don't really know.

I believe I'd opt for a large van with small trailer. You can haul a lot of stuff. A LOT! I'd keep spare gas in the trailer along with other things. Not really practical to carry more than about 50 gallons of gas.

^ ya have you seen those Quiglys Vans? they are usually chevy or ford full size vans with a Diesel with a Suspension lift kit and bigger tires. Now one of those I would like to have. Seen some videos of those vans doing some serius 4x4 action.
I Think it would be kinda cool to take a CHevy van ( I like the body style a lil better) and drop a Cummins 4bt in it and lift it up about 4 inches and shove some nobby 32-34 inch tires under it.

my friends dad had a late 70's or early 80's chevy 4x4 van. had a 350 and was up on 32's. that was one imposing van, to say the least.
