I've seen those vans. Worked with them for years. They get stuck easier than you think. I think you're better off going with a 2-wheel drive van (better economy), paying attention to where you drive it, and keeping enough fuel for about 1000 miles of traveling. If you like, you can have a larger fuel tank added or saddle tanks. You can comfortably sleep in a van. If stuff is in protected containers, you can move it outside to make room to snooze if necessary.

Yes, Yes, and it is fully amphibious, with a speed in water of up to 4.7 km/h.

Also popular in Scotland on some hunting estates for hauling in the deer etc.

  • 1985 toyota 4runner with a four inch lift, 33' bfg's, snorkel, straight axel's and a ramsey winch. I used to have that suv and it was a beast, has enough room for the family, narrow enough to fit most trails and will never quit running.

Bah, I'd steal a school bus. Runs on diesel, I can carry everything I need, nothing short of a semi can slow it down. Every window is a port hole for shooting, open the back emergency door and drop nails to stop anyone following you. Can sleep several. Get it to work with bio-diesel, and keep the thing running for years.

the bad thing about a bus and havin to defend yourself out of it is . it's made out of 1/8th thick aluminum. a pellet rifle can go through both sides without slowing down.lol the bus is a great idea if you beef up the sides for security.

You're right about 4x4 custom vans. They do very well on hard ground but are lousy in mud or unstable wet soils. They are pretty cool however.

Well, let us all be realistic here. Let's also assume that we are talking about a SHTF scenario in the good old USA. So, S really does HTF, and what happens immediately? I am assuming that this will be some sort of epidemic, and economic crisis doesn't count. We've survived through many of those already. I am talking about war or plague and our environment goes belly up, or even aliens or zombies.

So, there is wide spread panic, and there is descrution from such events, people freak the heck out and gas up everything. Owners of gas stations close down to hoard fuel to themselves. People riot, and take it back destroying most of it in the process.

We lose our basic needs and infrastructers of our cities and towns. No power, no running water, no heating and A/C, so on and so forth.

Everyone already paniced and is on the roads, with what little gas they have period. If you have gas and a running car you are now a target for someone who doesn't have one, the other, or both and they will try and take it from you. Use extreme force if necessary. Take into account how crappy our roads in the USA really are and they won't last more than 5 to 10 years with out proper maintenance. So you better get an off road vehicle, and you better get a common one where you can find parts, know how to fix it, and it better be fuel effeicient.

The bicycle is a very realistic and practical SHTF vehicle. It makes you faster than most people on foot, you can drive it any where in any condition, it has the least amount of maintenance, and it doesn't ever run out of fuel.

I will keep my mountain bike, head off to follow some train tracks heading south where it is warm and I will just loot what I find of dead people who got into a car and then got into a battle over the resources that involves a car. I also won't be a target since I don't have fuel or a working vehicle.

Another problem about having the most common. You are now a target for everyone who also needs a part. In a SHTF scenario, you can't just head on down to O'reilly's auto parts and pick up a new alternator.
