I was most inclined to agree with Crazy Ivan till I read SgtD's post. I do believe SgtD is closest, at least in what should scare us the most. Coordinated EMP attacks would destroy the infrastructure of our country. There are many groups working on EMP devises that do not require a nuclear reaction so that is obviously in their thoughts. Other than that, internal financial meltdown are my two biggest fears, and they both end the same way, or nearly so. The later is more likely I believe.

Once upon a time, I believed America was fairly safe from invasion from without. Basically because there were enough people with the old school mind set that would stand up to any force coming in from any direction, but I don't know any more. So many people have the new age urban mentality that they would call me a "vigilante" and say I have no right to defend my home. And if another country invaded now, or any group for that matter, Obama would apologize to THEM for our country causing the problem.

in reality the japanese admiral said it best when he said it would be futile to attack america because there would be a rifle behind every blade of grass... I think an invading force on american soil would not only have to contend with the military but with every able bodied american with a gun...

You are absolutely right. And that is the beauty of America, the last bastion of at least some personal freedom to defend one's life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. The reason we are America is because of the mindset that gives us the right to own and carry arms. And any one who wants to invade will have to contend with that. Unfortunately, there are more subtle ways of contending with it that are non-physical, and it seems that some people are more inclined these days to let that happen.

Nobody has any nuts I bet.Just like all over the rest of the country.Nobody wants to be the "troublemaker". In the meantime we are compromising and probably will continue to compromise all this country stands for.Its really a hell of a deal these days.My old grandad would turn in the grave if he knew.

I'm SERIOUSLY wanting to disagree with you, but due to the truth in your post, I'm finding it rather difficult to do so.

And THAT is exactly what kept the Soviet Union away from us.

Even though I think they are attacking us by pacifists means, I still think if the chips got down, enough of us would rise up and fight well enough to counter the threat. There is not a country or people on earth that could fight us on our own territory and prevail.

I don't trust those maple suckers up north! It's not even a real country! Just something France made up to make themselves feel better!

Just kidding! You can stop throwing the hockey pucks at me now!

This is from my perspective as a freelance writer with almost no political education or anything of that nature, so take it with a bucket of salt as I just run at the mouth here for a minute.

In the story I'm working on (one of many), it all begins on 16 December 2012. See, with all the mayhem and theory surrounding 21 December 2012, there are enough people in the population who believe the world will end. Naturally, a good number of those simply want to have a good time and do whatever they wish before they die. Others are more malicious in their thoughts, and what it all amounts to is mass hysteria.

The governments of various nations then institute their versions of martial law, including the United States. However, this only serves to increase mass hysteria, and by 18 December 2012, martial law is doing precious little to actually control the population. Therefore, societal structure starts to fall apart as entire cities begin to burn to the ground in one sense or another.

While a mass exodus from several cities takes place between 19 December 2012 and 20 December 2012, there are a number of people who--realizing that the proverbial crap has hit the fan--relocate to their various pre-planned "bug out" positions. Since my story takes place in my home town of Colorado Springs, the story covers the details of a particular group who decides to seek shelter in the Chapel Hills Mall, located just off of I-25 and one of the main thoroughfares of the city known as Academy Boulevard.

Will it happen? In one sense, I highly doubt it. Could it happen? I believe so. However, if societal structure fell to that degree, I doubt the remnants of the government would fire nuclear weapons on its own cities. I do believe that--like some portions of certain cities within the United States--law enforcement may simply abandon any efforts to control the population and essentially allow the citizens to (metaphorically) eat one another, so that there will be fewer miscreants to deal with when the time comes to eliminate them.

old Red Dawn. what a crappy amazing movie. no but seriously, if shtf. i would be fine where i'm at. i live in jacksonville, NC stationed at Camp Lejeune. There is Marines everywhere, we all have the same mindset. but the neighborhood i lived in as a child, no way. i MIGHT have 25% that even have weapons. i'd be screwed. i mean i would make an amazing stand, but i'd have to move down south across the river to kentucky to link up with some rednecks. either way, me and my wife would stay alive. me and her would make a sick team. she's a mean shot and i dont know if this is SOP for everyone at there house but we go over room clearing procedures every now and then with my AK and AR. does that make us crazy??

by the way i'm looking into wolverine patches now if anyone's interested, LOL

The red dawn stuff is not all a joke, remember the mayor in the movie, that just falls in lock step with the invading force? That is exactly what our illustrious leader would do, on a much greater scale. Black helicopters are hovering overhead now I'm sure, but IMO its not out of the possibility for an invasion scenario to happen with his knowledge and cooperation.

So 2012 is supposed to be some sort of milestone for "enders"? I have heard that somewhere else but believe no man knows for sure, hehe.
