Black Pepper keeps insects away while you are smoking you're meat. and either way Spices will be very valuable if modern conveniences break down.

black pepper just has an effect on the outside of the meat... i.e. it keeps the flys away or any other insects... but does it preserve the meats(like salt) in any other way other then protection from bugs?

Suggestion: purchase/store spices, when possible, in seed/leaf form, and then grind when needed. Spices, in their ground form, have about a six month shelf life. Grinding at time of need will prolong the nutritive and flavor enhancing value of your spices and herbs.

So, a spice/herb grinder should be included in your SHTF or personal/family preparedness items.

Or, a spice/herb grinder that may be more appealing and user friendly for G&G Forum members: http://cgi.ebay.com/3pc-Gold-Bullet-...item20adc48199

i like to use a pepper mill that has been cleaned and washed of the pepper for grinding of whole spices... any of the seed variety that are "pepper" sized work good and then throw in some dried herds, or onions and other dried veg and it makes some nice tasting spice grinds... i like going non-electric for my kitchen contraptions... just bought a apple pealer-cutter-corer this past friday... works awesome...

I actually use a metate. I have a mortar made from a large obsidian rock and a flint pestil I use for grinding glass, I think it's an actual Paiute artifact. I have another smaller one that is some kind of volcanic rock, looks like grey pumice, but much heavier and sturdier I use in the kitchen. I grind a lot of coarse ground pepper with it, just enough for a meal at a time.

Ever wonder why the hottest spicy food comes from the Third World nations? That super hot stuff kills bacteria, and maskes the taste of funky meat. So if you grow your own hot peppers, you can do the same.
Salt and Sugar will store forever, if kept dry. DO NOT use an O2 absorber - that will make it into a rock.......

How's about claymore cinnamon?

McCormicks makes a Garlic Seasalt in a small grinder..very tastey. It does however contain hydronaged palm and canola oils that would possibly get rancid in time.Exper date is about 1 year so you'd have to rotate fequently.or maybe store in vacuum sealed bag.

Why would you need a spice mill ?? How about a flat rock and a grinding stone ?? Salt would be a great item to trade. As would pepper, and coffee, tea and dried garlic. The medicinal herbs would be worth ammo to me. Read the Firefox Books on poultices to see what to pick in the wild !!
