What you have to think about in a shtf situation concerning weapons is-you would want a general rifle, (semi auto- quick shots but not full auto, dont wanna rock n roll it, waste ammo) that can reach up an effective range of 200 yards. Really, in a bad situation you would most likely be up close to the person you are shooting at. A reliable rifle that can be cleaned, repaired quickly and easily, reliable under stress and prolonged use. The ammo you would want to be light, like a .22 so as to be able to carry alot of it(My preference would be hornet). The reference to the fully automatic gun only applies to larger rounds, a .22 automatic would kick less so the accuracy under automatic fire would be greatly improved, and 10 .22's in the gut would do more damage than 1 or no rounds of 7.69 mm, however, the stopping power of 7.69 is alot soooooo they are equal in these terms of damage(Plus you can carry more, it is the most prevalent ammo in stores and is cheap and effective) CQC,-Revolver(.38), pure and simple, quick, easy, precise, need i say more?

375?! That may be over kill. My HD gun would be a 12 guage SxS loaded with 00 buck. No one wants to mess with the business end of one.

I would opt for a .22 pump or Lever.

If you are in a survival situation you will probably not have a refrigerator handy so shooting a deer or larger animal would be a waste because the meat would rot before you could eat it all.

Smoking the meat would be a solution but then you would be creating a smoke trail to show where you are.

A .22 is good for meal-size animals.

You can carry a lot of .22 ammunition.

A .22 makes far less noise than it's bigger brothers so it's another way to avoid detection.

If you are by yourself it really doesn't matter how large your gun is if you run into a group of thugs. You'll be outnumbered.

The ultimate goal is survival, so give me a reliable .22.

If I run into thugs, I want my weapon to incinerate one, so the others will be like:

"HOLY ****, that dude just blew Johnny away!!"

"Run, or you'll be the next one I incinerate."

The Wife and I each carry a SKS, Plus I have a Glock .45 and she has a CZ52. For food I'd use my 10/22 S/S w/folding stock. For cutting I carry an all purpose Leatherman Tool, a folding Buck and a Kukri for heavy work. The Wife has her own Leatherman, a Victronix and a Ka-Bar and Kukri. Sometimes when we go out I'll take the Mini-14 and She'll use the K-31, I love having a wife that's a better shot than me.

I live out in the country, but a thought came to me as I read the posts.

What kind of weapontry do you think you would come up against as you were trying to escape to a safer place ?
My thinking is if you have firearms and supplys theres gonna be plenty of folks that want what you got.

Survival is not about how many guns you can tote.

It all depends on how much weight you can carry. If you have a companion you can split up the things you only need one of.

For survival, I'd want knives, pots, a canteen, a hatchet, maybe a saw, a tarp, some mosquito netting, a lot of fire-starting stuff, some fishing line & hooks, string, heavy twine, a rope, maybe an oil lantern.
A folding shovel would be great.

When you put it all on the scale you hope you can carry it with you.

Clothes, boots, socks, oh yeah, and all those heavy guns.

If you are not planning to sit in one spot and have to be on the move, I would set myself a limit, say 50 lbs, and see how many necessities I could carry.

A .22 rifle would be my survival weapon.

As a Survival Addition to carrying the AR-15 now, I would include my .22 conversion unit with 30 rd. Magazine and 5 boxes of High Velocity .22LR ammo for small game hunting and at least 1 box of Sniper Subsonic Ammo for easily sound suppressed "Covert" action that may become necessary during SHTF survival situations !

Eh, I wouldn't make many fires. Light destroys your night vision, and that's a beacon to mole people and robots.

i think i would just carry a few baby bottle nipples they work pretty good on .22's for sound supression.another good thing is tennis balls they last longer4 balls in the can and wam ain't knowone gonna hear a thing.but a .22 would be a good all around gun they have some good range and if you hit a man in the head with a .22 bullet they are out of the picture .and you can carry like 5k rounds of ammo really easy .

I love my Ruger 10/22 S/S w/folding synthetic stock and 50rd clips, wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that. The .22 is a very under rated caliber, with good shot placement I've seen wild boars brought down.

Wouldnt wanna be on the recieving end of my model 1100 12 guage. But keep in mind mos, these people are probably gonna shoot back. Your not gonna have time to line up the shot. AND, the .22 is very inaccurate over 250 yards. Sometimes over 100 yards for some people. And no, the .22 is not underrated. For a hunting caliber, yes. For a man stopping caliber, no. Stick with an AK, AR, SKS, or a bolt action in something bigger than .243. I certainly wouldn't wanna shoot a guy with a .22, just to have him shoot back with a .308.

+1, and the only substitute for the 30-30 would be a Paratrooper/cowboy SKS.
