Cool Boundary Waters GPS units

Has anybody had any likes or dislikes on certain models. Mapping, accuracy, reliability, etc.

I have the Garmin cheapest model - can't think of the model number - the yellow one. No maps, etc.. I always use a compass and maps with a GPS as a back up. Never know when you might need that map reading ability/skill.

I have a Magellan Explorist 400, it's b&w screen has a full map of the USA and you can download detailed maps to SD memory chips and put them on the GPS. I like this system because it never becomes outdated since you can always download the newest maps. You should still take a good lensatic compass and a detailed, topographical, grid marked map.

i have a cheap lowarnce b/w screen handheld that i use for camping and hiking along with a good topo map and compass. it dosn't have many bells or whistles but its real easy on batteries. i also have a very detaild map and topo mad software on my laptop i use to print maps and to navigate on the road with. it is a lot easier looking at the screen on your laptop that some little 2by3 inch one on your dash.

Have a look at the website for Garmin GPS units. The handheld CSx models have the latest technology... On the Trail.

In the MN Backwaters area, because of all the water, and the potential of dropping it overboard, the 76CSx floats... The 60CSx is just as waterproof, but you'll need to tie it off on a lanyard for safety...unless you're a really good snorkeler to find it underwater.

Inside the units, the 60CSx and 76CSx are the same. Outside the units there are slight cosmetic differences, like location of buttons and the antenna.

From personal use experiences, I am way impressed with my 60CSx. It is feature rich, gets excellent reception from satellites, is conservative on batteries, has removable/expandable memory, compass works when you're standing still, and it has a color, easy-to-see screen...even when there isn't much light. When it's dark it has the standard back light viewing option to see what's on the screen.

Garmin

gunshooter: Sir; check 'LiveToShoot" thinking. Check where we both added thoughts. on another post.
The 'Garmin 60csx' is the higest rated of all the handhelds. It is water proof; but DOES NOT FLOAT
Garmin has the waterway mapping available.
I have researched for approx. 6 months. I'll have one. [CSX] soon. with maps for land and eastern seaboard. Always have a backup 'COMPASS'

"My wife used to sell GPS units at SW and she tells me it's one of the shiz in GPS units. Guess that means it's a good one?"

"True...and a good compass and detailed map should always go with you on the adventure. Those two indispensables, along with a good GPS, can ensure a positive experience in the great outdoors."

Take my compass and map wherever I go in the great outdoors, and a complimentary 21st century orienting tool too...

However, don't forget the map and compass, cause the GPS is pretty much just more weight in the pocket, along with the batteries, during an electrical storm, when you're over volcanic flows, etc.

If the Garmin 60CSx is the "best" GPS out there, then that's news to me and I'm glad I picked the "right" one.

Heck, I used various compasses (declination include) and maps for the first 40+ years of my life, time to spice it up a bit with "adding in" a GPS...

Thanks Craig, hopefully folks won't set aside their compass and map and solely depend on the GPS, could be a bit surprising for them it they do?

Thanks for the can of worms Chris, I needed some fresh fishing bait...
