One of those soap pads with steel wool and a 9v battery works good.I think they call them Brillo.Just push the terminals on the battery into the pad and it ignites the soap.Have a pile of kindling to drop it on because it gets hot in a hurry. sam.

A magnesium fire started can be had at walmart for next to nothing, I recommend 2 of them. Also take some coon balls and cover them in vaseline (petroleum jelly) and stick them in those little cases you put your film in to get pictures developed. You can also take regular matches and drip was on the heads to waterproof them, then just pick the wax off when you need to light them. These are a few better ideas than using your gun, if you fire it you give away your position and risk hurting yourself.

If you have a revolver, you might be able to start one with the flame from the barrel cylinder gap. Was at the range one day with my RSRH in .454, firing off of a pistol rest. The rest was covered with terry cloth, and after the first shot I looked away for a second, looked back and the rest was on fire.

You could get the kindling all ready and wait for lightning to strike.Wouldnt it be rather strenuous to carry a shooting bench with a terry top cloth everywhere you wanted to build a camp fire?Just funning. sam.

I had the aust army do a survival course on my farm a couple of years ago. Firelighting was one of the things they showed us.

If you want to start a fire with powder all you need is a metal spoon and a rock.
Basically, you pour a little powder onto a rock, next to some dry grass/fibrous bark use your spoons back to scratch the powder like you would a match, it will tale a couple of goe to get it right, but then poof, fire and burning grass.

This also works with sugar.......

Can you get us a video of this phenominon?One of the burn control processes for smokeless powder is to flatten the round balls.Also sugar is virtually a non excitable substance that only burns in extreme heat.I would like to see either excited to the point of ignition with a spoon held in the hand.Black powder will ignite that way but it is the same components as sulpher matches. sam.

The pioners did start fires with black powder. If you take a muzzle loading pistol with you, put some black powder on some fine bark. load your pistol with a small bit of powder and a cotton ball. You'll have a fire before you can say fire!

At first I was going to say bull but on afterthought it might very well light the powder as when you fire a primer without powder or bullet the sparks jump out the muzzle and look like they would light somethong,and the blast isnt great enough to blow everything away.It might just work. sam.

It works better if you have those soapy pads.The soap catches and flames up. sam.

I havent been able to find a vid on burning sugar but check this link out and give it a try.

Burning sugar cube trick

And you will see sugar burning. The spoon will generate enough heat to ignite the sugar and as you flick it the fire will be thrown into the tinder.

Will keep looking for vid or make one.

Tryed to answer this 3 times.This is the 4th.That was intresting.Hope you find the one about the spoon.Always willing to learn.Went through extensive survival training and never heard of burning sugar to start a fire. sam.

If you are sure your going to have a gun to start a fire with. Right now before you need it,remove the butt plate and insert whatever fire starter you like,replace butt plate and know for sure you can start a fire with a gun

Problem becomes the force of flow from barrel of gun. You would most likely either not have enough ingition material or too much air outflow actually pushing away your combustables.

Also, it is really not easy to pull a bullet in the hunting or survival environment unless you have a bullet puller from a loading set or a proper sized wrench (but turning and pulling the bullet might ignite the powder leaving you in bad shape).

Best solution - take the proper equipment hunting or camping to do the job at hand. It is safer, has a greater chance of working, and really does not take that much space.

Twisting and pulling on a bullet with a pair of pliers won't ignite the power. I've done it several times. As far as igniting it goes, use the old bow and stick method with some gunpowder under the stick. OOOOOOORRR!!! How about this?! Take a flint.
