Faraday cage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia You're probably better off putting large amounts of lead around the important electrical components in your vehicle, as a Faraday Cage needs to be grounded or at least be connected to something that will absorb the electromagnetic radiation.

| I would think if things got crazy I wouldn't plan your whole existance on a vehicle, nice to have but gasoline will no doubt be very expensive if you can find it? |

| Senior Member | True and thats why I have my diesel pickup set aside i can use heating oil, kerosene, ect anything but gasoline if needed. I have tested all of these out so I know it will work only affects milage and amount of smoke from the tail pipe. ofcoures 98% of my plans involve staying home anyway but its good to plan for the 2%.

| Jeep Grand Cherokee with bicycle mounted on top rack. If I get down the road and can't drive or find alternative off-road routes... then the bike comes down and I do some sweating. |

| Animal or human powered vehicle would be the most reliable though not the fastest. Living where I do it is easy to just "disappear" and get away from the population since it is so limited. The big drawback is that the majority of population here, including my wife and I, abut the 2 biggest military installations in the state. Thats a pretty big target heh. I always hope that if it where to be a nuclear SHTF scenario that I am at ground zero... no worries then ! |

| My wife's Honda Civic Hybrid: 45 m.p.g. It's tiny, but it will take us a long way. I'm 30 minutes from Cleveland. If it gets hit with thermonuclear weapons, we're toast anyway, so I'm not worried about EMP. The Civic has bicycle racks, but they are only useful in warm weather. It's March and we got two feet of snow last Saturday. Also, there is just not enough wildreness around here for a large number of people to "bug-out" to. I think I'd pull the cars into the garage, turn off the house lights and STFU. I can handle the odd prowler looking for canned goods. In the face of a real armed effort to get in, however, the strategy would be to withdraw and find a quiet place to pass the time. |

That's one reason I want a Mercedes 300SDL so much. I'm positive it would start okay in an EMP scenario. Also, consider this: in that scenario, 98% of all vehicles will not start because their circuitry is fried. The roads may not be as crowded as we fear, at least if the pulse arrives at other than a rush hour period. If you have an antique car that will run, you may want to think about adding a hand-crank gas pump and some 5 gallon jerry cans to your car kit. You'll be able to siphon fuel out of the tanks of the dead cars. | |

| It is pretty certain that whatever vehicle you use will eventually become abandoned due to fuel, damage, etc. I would think to use ANY 4 x 4 to get where you need to bug out to ... away from cities and/or any threats in the area. Once you are in place, go to the animal kind for travel afterward, reserving your vehicle and fuel for an emergency. |

| I have a Six-Wheeled ATV made by Max it will pull around 1 ton easy and can go about 500 miles on a tank of gas. It is amphibious and I have taken it through mud 2 feet thick with no probs. I'd hook it to the SUV and head with the family and when the tiem came un-hitch unload it fomr the trailer load it and the trailer up and hook the trailer to it. |

| Senior Member | I wish I still had my old CJ. 1980 CJ5 with 4in lift and 33s. Old Chevy 350 with a 4bbl quadrajet carb. I could take that thing anywhere. Had a 9500lb warn winch on the front just incase i got stupid. I had installed 1986 CJ7 axles on it to give it a wider footprint and a Dana 44 rear. Since it only got 8 mpg I had 2 5gall jerry cans on back with my full size spare. I think the onlything that the EMP would have fried would have been the sweet stereo system i had in it. I pulled many suzukis out with it back in the day most of the time in 2wd covering them with mud from the rooster tails |
