Memory Chips in your BOB

This was brought up on another forum and I thought I'd share with you guys.

Keep a copy of your important documents, reference material, photographs, etc. on a memory chip. All of our electronic equipment that has expanded memory uses SD Chips. You can get these chips up to 2GB in size, that's a heck of allot of information. I'm not saying this should replace your hard copies but it is an excellent backup.

Currently I have detailed maps of the entire US and Canada on chips for my Explorist 400. I also have several field manuals and other reference material on chips that I can read from my PDA. Family pictures have been stored on these along with all our important documentation.

This postage size chip can carry what would be hundreds of pounds of paper. If you already have this equipment you might as well put it to good use.

I prefer the little "thumb-drives" or memory sticks. They seem a little tougher and use usb ports. It is all preference though - you do have an excellent idea though. I think I will back up a little more too them.

I have an old 512 mb memory stick from PNY, I wrapped it in electric tape because it was purple. It has been dropped, in very dusty condition, and washed in the washing machine more than once, still works like a champ. I do not recommend it but all my thumb drives are wrapped tightly in electric tape seems to work well.
