Chief, I like reading what other people consider their ideal survival weapon. As Deacon Matson said in Tunnel in the Sky, survival is an art, not a science. I like what you did with yours. My only complaint is the single-shot limitation, but that's a personal prejudice and not a comment on your preference.

Although I am curious: what are those going for these days? Were I to get one, I think I'd opt for the .410/.45 Long Colt chambering. It works okay in the Taurus Judge pistol (or so the folks at Guns & Ammo say), and the longer barrel could only improve performance. Could be interesting.

AR 7 / Henry

I had a couple AR 7's at one time, for a survival "hunting" they are a gimik firearm, they have pretty lame sights and would recomend getting a .22 hunting rifle that dissembles. Just go out hunting with the thing to find out what works for you, just get a Henry or AR7 and try hunting rabbits or other varmits, you will soon discover its limitations, what good does it do you if it floats and folds up like a pocket knife and you cant hit anything smaller than a man with it?

I had one made by Charter. It was junque, as you say.

Henry is a whole 'nother story. Decently accurate, reliable. I haven't hunted with it but it ought to work fine for 15 yard shots.

Personally

I don't feel it is a well designed or, for that matter, planned firearm.

A little more money for development would have put a .223
and a 20 gauge with adjustable chokes. A good quality trigger
would help.

Chamber insert's

mabe a sub caliber chamber insert would be better than buying a gimik gun!

I held one of these guns a couple of weeks ago and it just didn't feel right. Plus it is so light it kept waving around and you couldn't hit anything.

I have an AR-7 hanging in the shed. I use it to shoot AT blackbirds when I am working out there. I even hit one now and then but it has to be within 25 yards or so. I would never depend on it for food. For food, I would set a snare.
