Thanks Andrew. I just was thinking about what might be the most useful. However I forgot some important items...

Compass (Although I have one built into my machete)
Camelback/canteen or both.
Water Purification tablets

I don't know about you all, but I think that a small camp stove might be useful as well.

Well, after seeing some of the critters up there last year the main thing I'd take with me is:

1) a friend that I can out run...

In that case maybe the 10/22 isn't the best choice...

Would a Remington 700 in .308 discourage them?

If you could get out of town, with out being stopped by troops and all your stuff confiscated and thrown in a camp. They will take all the school kids somewhere, all the office workers somewhere else, and you will be too busy trying to find your loved ones. I'll stand my ground right here, at home if I can get back. That way I have justification when the contractors try to break in. I'm not so worried about loonies, but I am worried about FEMA and Blackwater. people that go through natural disasters come back to ransacked homes, no guns or valuables left.

FEMA has no interest in your stuff. The ransacked homes is due to POS looters.
