Old Timer has the right idea though. With an accurate watch (this was the biggest problems for sailors back in the 1700/1800's) a compass, and a good map, you can pretty much figure out where you are on the earth.

Something to measure Polaris' (Northern Star) angle above the horizon also helps.
lol for that kind of money I could hire a guide ???

GPS's lie, don't always hook up with the mother ship, and run on something you can never find... Get a good compass (i.e., not a military lensatic), study it, use it, in familiar territory, and above all else, TRUST it. Then study basic land navigation; over and over! Then learn about topo maps. There are excellent courses on DVD! Then learn field expedient navigation techniques. When you have all of this down, start all over... When you have this down pat, get a mechanical altimeter and do it again. These two items will guarantee, with the appropriate level of training, that you will never become, how does the army mispell it, misorientated?
