Reads like you've got a pretty good Ham Shack setup...very versatile and affordable too.

Here's a compact mobile that's really caught my attention...if only I could find a better price on the unit. What do you (and Craig) think of its capabilities?

I read about it yesterday; I like it. One of the ?grumbles? about parasitic signals at times. Don't worry about that. The speaker may need addressing.

Between you and Rich, I know who to turn to for some answers as I begin my journey into that area.

My Earl, the guy who introduced me to Ham, is in MN, and I'm in ID, so having extra people to contact for assistance will be nice...

Hello Livetoshoot, I have been a ham for over 20 years and my experience with Kenwood radios have been excellent. I would setup a recharge with some type of solar. Comm. is going to very important in the future. I use a Icom 706 and Kenwood 690sat for most of my work.

Hey Mike.
I use the 690 KW in my truck with a screwdriver antenna. My main base radio is an Icom 761 , but I also Have the KW TS530s, the KW TS830s, and an Icom 720A for backup...

I use a Yaesu VX-5 never had any trouble with it I just have to get the manual out evry time I want to reprogram it. I also have an Alinco 580? dual band HT. it has never given me any trouble and it's easy to use. I have a tm-261a which doesn't get used much, my main mobile is a Yaesu FT-817, hooked up to a tri band ant with a HF ant under the back seat just in case. Base is equiped with a Yaesu FT-767 and all modules, Kenwood TM7950, and a couple of Kenwood TS-700A 1 for packet and 1 for APRS. You probably made the right decision with the Kenwood if it's easier to operate than the Yaesu HTs

What some of use isn't readily available. Yeah, you can find it; but not hardly worth the effort.
Our earlier stuff had anything from tubes to coil wound [we did] wrappings.
Some of my newer stuff uses modified SMT stuff.
New stuff has much more SMT and that is ?better? == more ?stable? signals. and you can still ?work? on them.

?better? ?best? will always be relative terms. I have part ICOM and a Yaesu 160m everything type: that isn't worth $much. I couldn't replace it for $thousands more.

High humidity sparkles pops and smoke

and it'll still hum right along.

New to HAM are; by and large; not ?builder fixers? nor should they be. Finding parts at times will aggravate the mess outta you.

That being said; [not ego related or to be considered a put down] your best energy will be in the "antenna" and learning the real meaning of a ground. Next tinkering with balancers, and coil wrap. Done with coax to change channels on TV

it can work.

That particular Yaesu that was part of my last='s messages is about the best representatives in the 'modern' age.

Like many of my firearms; I pick and choose for what will suite me. Knowing just enough to keep from getting dead; I enjoy learning about others adventures; with the continued learnings for me.
