hum, i don't have any expirience, but i started a thread asking for ammo weights and it changed my ideas, i actually go for ammo weight as main concern, for instance if you could only carry 20 pounds of ammo (not magazines or gun) you can carry these

with the weights i know of

about 200 shotgun shells
or
2750 .22lr 36 grain
or
500 .45 230 grain
or
700 9mm 115 grain
or
400 .308 150 grain
or
800 10mm (this doesn't sound right)

another thought is that if you get a bolt action .308 it might last longer than if you got a ak-47 type or if you have a 9mm CX4 it might take more to take down what you need, or if you are using just the CX4 with a matching 9mm pistol you might be able to hunt small game but if you either ever need to hunt for lots of people you would waste ammo but if you had a .308 you can hunt bigger game and be able to feed 10 people or more with one shot instead of using a shot per person or something, this is all based of theory though so

binabik,

I had similar thoughts as you, ie weight concerns with regards to firearms AND THEIR AMMO. To me that would rule out ANY shotgun. The ammo is simply too heavy to carry around in any sizeable amounts.

I would think I'd have to limit myself to one long gun, ie rifle, and one handgun. I would consider availability of ammo along with its weight as main factor/concern. I would lean towards a 9mm pistol due to its worldwide availability and reduce weight compare to say the .45ACP. Although I'd admight I do like the .357mag revolver for its wider applicability and versatility. Tough call for me between a 9mm pistol and .357mag. Anyone have opinions on this????

For long gun, I serious consider a .223rem. Again due to wide availability and weight concerns vs say .308win or the .30-06. With the right ammo it can harvest deer size game.

I'd hate to give up the .22lr either in rifle or handgun version as it does have merit, but not sure what choice I would have. I could easily carry 1,000-2,0000 rounds which has much appeal and is fairly quiet as to avoid attention. Tough choices.

hey leo,

here is my choice though this is based solely on research and no expierience what so ever, i do not own any of these weapons.

i am going with a fiveseven and p90 since these are 100 for a pound and the gun is lightweight also.

i am a bit also a little worried about animals and was wanting to take a big bore rifle but i figure that that would take away from what i can carry. so i want a 10mm glock since they are fiarly big bore and twice as powerful as .40 caliber. i don't know how much ammo i would take for this though but based on the above weight probably 400-500

i want to take a ruger since they are fiarly small and .22 caliber and i can take a couple hundred rounds for this so that i can mainly gather food in the long run.

now this doesn't leave much weight for ammo for it but i was also thinking about the m1014 shotgun since this would be lighter weight and it can be used for quite a bit of stuff, could take 50 shots for defense against people, 25 slugs for hunting and animal defense and 25 or 50 more for bird hunting.

if you didn't want the shotgun i think a steyrscout in .308 would be good since that is a lightweight rifle and yet it can still take down big game in case you ever hunt for a group of people instead of using 10 shots of .22 or shotshell you can use one bullet.

now all of the above guns can be used against people and be fairly handleable but most like the five seven and the .22 can be used agianst small game and the shotgun can be used for bird hunting, big game hunting, and aginast people, and of course the 10 mm is lighter and more manageable then a .50 caliber deagle or similar

i also would carry a subcompact versin, maybe springfied XD in subcompact with mag extentions since they are small and can have a huge capacity even for subcompact, but it only comes in 9mm and a subcompact maybe .45 glock would be light also. i would carry no ammo for these and they would just mainly be for when i salvage or trade

ps .223 doesn't seem like a good thing because it seems like it is only semi good against people, though it will be plentiful

binabik,

My .223rem would be a bolt action sporter rifle. My reasonings, those AR types are freaking heavy, most weight around 9lb or 9.5 lbs empty. My sporter weight rifle w/ scope weighs 8lb. Second, I believe my bolt action rifle can tolerate more neglect in not being cleaned & maintained regularly and still function whereas semi-auto generally need more maintenence in cleaning and kept lube up to function.

There are several factory loads available that can clean harvest big game such as whitedeer, muledeer, antelope, etc. Such rounds as the 60gr Nosler partition, 64gr powerpoint, and 52gr TSX to mention a few. I believe the .223rem is quite capable of leathality against humans w/ alot of ammo choices to chose from. It has the advantage of being lighter ammo than the 30cal ammo or shotgun ammo. I've made the mistake of carry a box of 12gauge shells around one time while hunting. After walking several hours, I regret every minute carrying them!!

The 9mm pistol is also due to light(er) ammo weight and widely available. It has 13mag capacity and with two spares I can quicly reload if necessary. It's advantage is that I can always be wearing the handgun, whereas I might not always be carrying my rifle in my hands at all time. This will allow me the chance to fight my way back to the rifle.

Figure 200 rounds of 9mm, and not sure yet how much .223rem ammo to carry. Most of my pack we be used for other vitals necessarities stuff such as water purifiers, firestarters, adequate clothing, gun cleaning stuff, hygenie material, cooking utensils, medicine, and shelter, ect. The weight could add up very quickly. I'd figure 60 lbs.

The biggest obstacle to me is that I'm out of shape and not in condition to carry a 60 lb pack on my back while hoofing it through the wilderness. Perhaps getting a mountain bike would be an option?? If you have a wife and small kids, your problems are seriously compounded. If so bugging out my not be an option for you.

Hey leo, i checked the weights of what i want to carry and i feel i can't carry all 3, i don't know how much a .223 cartridge weighs but i know you can carry about 400 .308 bullets in 20 pounds. you mentioned your .223 sporter weighs 8 pounds, well there is a fairly expensive but extremly reliable .308 rifle that weighs 6.6 pounds, the steyr scout, though it also comes in .223, i was wanting to carry 3 long guns but that would be 24 pounds, if i carry two it will be 16-17 pounds, if i figure 30 pounds of equipment not gun related and 20 pounds of ammo, i reckon my pack would be 67 pounds, now this is extremly heavy and i would rather get it down lower but considering how much ammo weighs this might not be possible, i was acutally told about a travois (look it up on wikipedia to get the gerneral idea) and it looked like a good idea. i hear .223 ammo is actually quite light but i do know that 9mm is about 2.5-3 pounds for 100, no i don't have a family, or wife, or small kids though having a wife you could share the load if needed. if i were to use the weights i have currently i could carry 550 rounds of .22lr, 200 rounds of .308, 500 rounds of 5.7 for my pistol, and 250 rounds of 10 mm and not go over 20 pounds. the .22 for smal game hunting, the .308 for hunting for a group or big game, or even people, 5.7 for my combat pistol, and 10 mm for defense against wild animals and people if need be. if i am only carrying 500 rounds of 5.7 i can get rid of the p90 cause that amout of rounds isn't enough to justify 6.8 extra pounds so i can probably get my weight down to 50 or so pounds,

to the person who started this tread sorry for deviating from the topic and i ask leo to private message me if he wants to keep discussing this

my choice out of your choices would probably be the beretta cx4 storm and the glock 17. using the same ammo for both guns would make everything A LOT easier. also you can carry a lot of 9mm ammo compared to some others you have listed.

This is a good read. I have always been into handguns, but with more thoughts of a possible SHTF momment in the future, makes me start thinking of long guns. What would be a good gun and caliber? It seems like most so far are suggestion the .223
