308, 223, 22, 12ga, 40s&w. Make sure you have those 5 and you should be set. US military is 308 and 223, 40s&w is what the vast majority of LEO's use. 12ga and 22 are for small game and birds for subsistence. Learn to reload and get lots of supplies, that way if you do get ammo that isn't the right size you can recycle some of it or all of it.

How is 12 gauge put into a catagory for only small game and birds?

12ga is perfectly appropriate for game larger than small birds. In CT, we're only allowed to legally hunt deer with shotguns on public land. Slugs do wonders on deer, and buckshot is called buckshot for a reason.

Really? I had always herd it was because a guy put 10 dimes in an old shotgun barrel and blasted a sheriff with it. Not to mention there isn't a buck shot made that will kill a buck much past 30 feet.

12 ga was for aerial targets it is pretty unsafe to shoot rifle at aerial targets. Sure you could use it for deer with slugs, or defense, but I would rather have the 223 or 308 for those.

I have never ever heard that before but I think I may tell a few people that now. I heard it was because it was used to kill bucks.

Also as far as ammo availability goes they will restock it. I think some of you who are freaking out should read up on supply and demand. Obviously the demand has gone up and the ammo companies will adjust, after all they do want your money so they can stay in business. With the economy going down they would love to sell you all the ammo you can afford.

Interesting dime shooting experience, it would appear to me that dimes are not a viable load, but i still wouldn't want to get shot by it. I guess when our dimes are worthless we can reload them to kill small game lol.

Slugs in a shotgun do wonders on deer and even game larger than that! Buckshot is used alot around here in Arkansas, good for about 30 yards, not feet!

If you buy a rifled slug barrel for your shotgun you have a gun better than many rifles with good sabot slugs.

Georgia Arms Canned Heat for bulk .223 ammo. They ship it out in milsurp ammo cans, 500 per can. Good stuff. My Minis like it.

I tend to have quite a bit of 22 rf ammo on hand. You do have to buy smart. Someone mentioned Remington bulk packs; well of late they aren't as reliable as in the past, but having some is a lot better than having none. They have improved over what was being sold a year ago however. I think Remington is listening.

I keep a fair supply of anything I shoot; 22, 38spl, 357 mag, 40 S&W, 41 mag, 480 ruger, 223 and a few others. I've always kept a fair supply on hand. It is not something that I just started doing in the last year.
