K-31 Scope Mount

Hey fellow K-31 enthusiasts,

I've had my K31 for about a year and a half and after shooting the irons quite a bit have decided to scope it and see how I like it. I'd like your recommendations on a scope mount, I've seen some that drill the reciever which I tend to shy away from, others seem to be mounted via clamp. Does anybody have experience with any certain mount?

What about scope recomendations? Looking to spend about 150 on glass. A nikon Prostaff maybe? Something else? Also, with a decent shooter, can these rifles shoot ouit to 6-700 yards accurately? I've shot at 300 yards but no further with irons.

This is your lucky day.
It just so happens that I am going to be ordering a mount from Brownells.
I had one on my first K31,then I sold the gun along with the mount.
Now I have bought another K31 with a walnut stock, and will be buying the same mount for it.
It is rock solid, and clamps on perfectly.
Here's the link:

SWISS PRODUCTS : Aluminum K31 Clamp-On Mount (100-000-725) - World's Largest Supplier of Firearm Accessories, Gun Parts and Gunsmithing Tools

Also, check out this article from this website,it shows how it will look on your gun:

Collecting and Shooting the Military Surplus Rifle (2006) - Surplusrifle.com

You won't be disappointed, and it is well worth the money.
I'm going to put a Bushnell Trophy scope on mine as I think they are awesome.
Good luck to you,
Jason M

Here's a picture of my beech stock K31 with the mount on it:

Latigo stops by here every now and then he can answer any questions you would have..
His family is SRP, but they sell only to their vendors like Brownells ..I have one SRP product so far for my M1911 it looks pretty good.

Good morning, Buddy! You're up early! I'm up early to run the fan in the armoury to cool it off. I have a lot of SMKs to impact coat today and its going to be hot in Lost Prairie!

I posted the following copy yesterday for another fellow who had a few questions. Maybe this will help.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Strangely enough, I have one.
No, it won't come loose, no you won't have to retighten anything at all, yes the 3/8" scope rail is necessary. Any wider and it will interfere with 100% ejection on the left and would skin your knuckles on the right.

This is one of mine. I like the low profile and fixed 6 powere.

With more than 3,500 Clamp On Mounts down the road we have yet to have a failure. We have had 4 or 5 complaints on-line that, after first hand inspection turned out not to ours at all, but we actually replaced three of them even though they were knock-offs.
We also had 12 Steel Mounts that missed a CNC cut and it took a full year to locate and replace them, but eventually all of them were accounted for.
And the shop guys here and I use the aluminum mounts, not the steel. My Father began making the steel mounts some years ago because of simple demand and no other reason.
I forgot to add that if you zero your scope at 200 yards you'll shoot from 100 to 400 yards with almost no noticeable change in POI.
You should be able to go right out to 1,000 yards with the right scope on your k31. The cartridge is capable if you are.

Warne are very good rings, Wrothgar. Actually any 3/8" rail will do from the cheaper Tasco to the expensive Millet Tikka rings. My own opinion is any ring with the least projections at the side. You'll want to keep any of the mounting projections on the outside (right side) of the rail.
Try to get the rings that are the lowest possible for your objective lens. The lower the scope is, the better your cheek weld.
Use a cheek pad if you need to. This one is mine made by the SRDC webmaster. My setup is low enough already but he personalized it and it looks cool.

He made this one for my Dad with our St.Marie Family Crest on it. Pretty cool, eh?

Please post pictures once you're all set up.

Many of the K owners prefer the look of a low profile scope. The old Weaver K series, the Unertl and Lyman steel tubes can be found on the auction sites at very reasonable prices. These old scope have pretty nice glass and work well for me out to 400yds. If you want to shoot out to the limits of the rifle a fixed 6 or 8 power would be good.

If you go with a Pro Staff you are going to need taller rings to clear the rear sight.

This is a Weaver K4, SP mount and Warne rings.

The clamp-on mount gives you a slight off-set.

I had a Bushnell "Banner" scope on my first K31.
They are great scopes in my opinion, and are not that expensive.

Ok sweet, now that I know the mount, time to find a scope. I want to at least be shooting at 5-600 yards...what kinds of scopes will let me see that far but still fit on this mount?

Price range 150ish.

The one in my photo does that easily. Its a fixed 8 power, but I'm not sure you can find them anymore. I also use fixed 6 power at that range, but the scope for those ranges and out to 1,000 is the one I bought my Dad. An IOR Valdada fixed 10 power.

This one is a Compact Leupold 2.5 to 8 power and easily does 600 yards.

The one on this zfk55 is another Leupold Compace fixed 6 power, one of my all-time favorites.

I have a Bushnell compact 6 power that I really like too. Believe it or not this one is a fixed 6 Leapers! Its now 15 years old and has been on a 100 yard k31 Load Data k31 just as solid and accurate as can be............ all for $69.00! People make fun of that one but its one of my Dad's favorites. Lots of those same guys are using loads developed with this little scope.

And for me......... If you can push the budget closer to $3,000.00...... This is one of mine and my alltime favorite. The Premier Heritage 3-15x50

I have a Nikon prostaff fixed power scope on mine, 4 or 6 power I think. It shoots great and I really like the mount. I had to remove it once and it held zero when I put it back on. You can't go wrong with a St Maries scope mount.

I have a older Leapers 4X, amazing good little scope for the price.

I just started looking for a higher end scope for my new 7.62. A friend works for leupold and I can get a smoking deal on a ER/T 8.5-25x50 M5. Very tempting. For this sweet heart.

Does anybody know anything about these scopes, and if it would fit on that mount/hold zero with the recoil of a 7.5X55 and be decent out to 500+meters?

I believe its 32mm. Yes a 40mm will fit but you may have to use taller scope rings. I'm pretty sure my scope is the Nikon 4x32 22 cal classic. Not much power but I use a spotting scope to view my targets rather than my scope.

You well need tall rings for sure with a 40mm or larger bell. Scope clearance is a little more problematic because you are working with a 3/8 rail.

What does a 3/8" rail have to do with it? Is that not the standard scope rail? What do most rings come ready to mount to?

The scopes you listed all have a very large bell. Even the 40mm objective scopes well have a bell diameter of over 50mm. You well need a TALL ring for clearance and finding that tall of ring for the 3/8 rail may not be that easy. I don't know as I have never looked for one. The 3/8 rail is normally used for rimfire mounts. Mounts used on most center fires are a Weaver or Picitinny rail, they are wider and not compatible with the 3/8 rail.

This is one reason many chose to use a fixed 4X or 6X as these well normally have a smaller bell and less clearance issues.
