What'er we looking at?

The pic is of illustration Figure 181, from page 399 of James V. Howe's THE MODERN GUNSMITH, Vol. II, last copyright in 1954. This section drawing on the Schmidt-Rubin is found in the chapter, REVIEW OF MILITARY SMALL ARMS. No mention of model numbers are found in the chapter, but the rifle illustration shows a straight gripped stock. Looking like a cross between an 1889 and an 1896/11. I like the look and feel of a straight grip. Any comments?

It looks like an 1896 before conversion.
