Opinions on Taurus Quality

I am new to the hd/sd arms and am in the process of trying to choose a manufacturer. My wife has already chosen her carry, a Taurus arms 24/7 compact in 9mm. I on the other hand am a wheel man and have decided on a 357 W/4" for home and a 38snub w/up to 3" for ccw. All I need is opinions on Taurus, customer service, quality and accuracy. All responses are welcome. Also I have Psoriatic Arthritis, So most any caliber larger that 357 would be pushing my limitations.
Thank you

Caliber wise you made a wise choice. Taurus makes a good gun, I would personally go for a used smith but it is up to your personal preference.

Winston, back out and look up at Manufacturers. Do you see Taurus? Copy your post and post it up there. Good luck.

I've heard it every way. Best I can tell, their quality is inconsistent. I've heard of Raging Bulls placing in shooting matches, and talked to 2 different people who had a revolver that literally wouldn't fire, or fell apart while reloading.

I like Taurus, but all I can say is I've heard mixed reviews on top of mixed reviews.

When it comes down to brass tacks, I'd rather have a Ruger or Smith ANY DAY, but the little numbers like the judge, are just something you don't find anywhere else. I like those a LOT. Given your statements, you should look at the Ruger .327 magnum. It was designed to have the punch of the .357 mag with the kick of a .22. My FIL has one and he says it's all true, punches through steel, and kicks like a mouse. I'm sold.

30 + years of Gunsmithing Experience and performing surgery on them and I will NEVER own a Taurus after having so many new guns failing after less than 1 box of shells. Replacement Parts are near impossible to get from Taurus and wait time runs 6 to 9 months for warranty work.Their Customer Service Sucks !!!!!!
Internal Parts are hit or miss as far as tempering and metallurgy goes...
I wont risk My Life with a Taurus. Period

My thoughts:

Solid, affordable revolvers. (I prefer American-made, they're good for their job)

Not sure about semis or rifles.

HOWEVER, Chuck Norris carried a Taurus PT-92 with a nickel finish and pearl grips for most of Walker Texas Ranger. So I'm gonna go against
Gen. Patton, and go with Chuck. If Taurus' semis are good enough for Chuck Norris, then I'd buy one. Yes, I'm serious.

Oh, a side note - I have a YouTube playlist on right now. As soon as I mentioned Chuck Norris, "For Whom The Bell Tolls" started up, the most epic song ever - fitting for Chuck.

Chuck used a lot of Different guns in the series and
The Taurus PT92 is used as a stand-in for the Beretta 92 on the show.
But Dude...Its a freaking TV show and they Shoot BLANKS...

I'm sorry to hear that.

There are multiple guns on the market that are better quality, and more reliable for self defense.

I have posted my experience with Taurus hand guns on multiple threads, and, unlike others who bash certain brands of guns just because they don't like the way they look, I actually have experienced bad results with Taurus hand guns. I have also had good results with them, but enough bad results to make me NOT want to trust my life on their functioning 100%.

A lifetime warranty does you no good in the morgue.

If price is REALLY an obstacle, get a better quality brand USED gun for your wife and yourself.

Personally, if I wanted ONE self defense hand gun that I was going to trust my life to ALL THE TIME, I would buy the highest quality brand name I could get, regardless of price, and do without whatever it took to be able to afford it. A self defense hand gun is life insurance that pays YOU the benefit. Do want to skimp or go "on the cheap" with it?

I have 4 Taurus pistols now and none of them has ever givin me any problems at all. I have a Colt 80 series 1911 and a Taurus PT1911 and I actually like the pt better. I carry a Taurus PT709 slim and have put over 5,000 rounds through it. My pt 92 is over ten years old. So excuse me that I dont take alot of you Taurus Basher's advice and throw them away. I dont have any problems with them and I'm sticking with them and I do trust my life with them.

I've owned a couple dozen firearms over the past 40 years. Mostly Colts, Rugers, Smith & Wessons.
I have owned 3 Taurus products, a PT-92, PT-22, and a PT-911.
From my experience Taurus quality is as good as any and better than most.

Moose, I know it is a stand-in for the Beretta but it IS a Taurus. And if I recall, he used it for most of the show. And blanks or not, if it's good enough for Chuck...come on now.

Ahhhh.

Well, in that case, I would suggest you get together with a VERY experienced hand gun shooter/instructor that has a good sized collection, and ask a LOT of questions before you buy any hand gun.

I have owned over 150 hand guns at one time or another. I like shooting them. It has been my experience that many inexpensive hand guns will function for a while, but the wear starts to take a toll on them after about 500 rounds.

The reason I mention that is because if you intend to use a hand gun for self defense, you need to practice with it, a LOT. I'm talking about shooting at least a thousand rounds to get acquainted with the actual mechanics of it, and to ingrain the hand/eye coordination that makes shooting it "natural" for you.

Most people never shoot enough ammo through a gun to REALLY know if the gun will be 100% dependable, and to know how it shoots under various conditions (hot, cold, wind, rain, snow, etc.).

Get guns that "fit" you and your wife. By that I mean guns that will naturally point at the center of target when held in a proper and comfortable grip.

The guns should have easy (for you) to operate controls. It should be durable. It should be light weight if you intend to use it for concealed carry. It should be easy to reload. It should be simple to field strip and clean. It should have a lifetime manufacturer's warranty with a company whose service record is excellent, just in case. It should be reasonably accurate with any major manufacturer's ammunition that you can buy in a sporting good store. It should be a caliber commonly used for self defense.

I could add more to the list, but you get the idea.

A good hand gun instructor's time would be money well spent, BEFORE you buy a couple of hand guns.

Anyway... I agree with Ten Man on that last one.

Edit:

Oh, I just saw this thread is getting a little old.
