Caliber DOES matter! A LOT more than brand! If you are going to tangle with a mountain lion/panther/cougar or what ever they are called you need a large caliber! 357mag minimum and 44 mag preferred! Those cats are NOT nice when they come after you!

As far as which Taurus.....Let me just say this. I own a Taurus, S&W and a Ruger all in 38/357mag. The Taurus is the worst shooter of the three. Just sayin'.

For that money I would recommend a used Ruger GP100.

Welcome to Guns and Game Beaner. I have a few Taurus Stainless Steel revolvers for hunting purposes. My last one I got is a model 608 S.S. 357 Magnum 8 shot. It has a 61/2 inch barrel and ported for recoil. Nice Rubber grips and slim with a nice grip. It has a ventilated rib also. There are many Taurus haters out there but I have never had a problem with their magnum revolvers. It is adequate for deer and hog hunting and a good sidearm when hunting. Its a very accurate handgun like my others. It will kill raccoons but will destroy their hides. They run a little over $500 though unless you find a used one. Lit me know if you find one you like.

Im with Rando, my Taurus 608 is awesome. The ported barrel makes the follow up shot quicker to put back on target. Plus with the 6" barrel, it meets minimum requirements for hunting in my area and with 8 shots, I know I will have enough for any situation.

I owned a Taurus 66 in .357 for almost a decade, those things are indestructible!!
Only sold it when I ran short of cash to go to college...still miss it, it was a sweet shooter

There are a lot of Ruger Pogue's out there...ignore them. Those fanboys are insane...

.44 Mag or .454 Casull will do any animal in North America a death worthy of its kind.

I would say the same. You're probably going to have to find a used one to get within your price range, though.
