I can't post any more pictures till monday but there are a few more close up shots. I will do that on Monday. Felt like a pop gun with this big gun. The threads broke pretty close to the top. Some, but not much left in the frame. That area seems to be pretty thin so if there is any problems in the casting there I can imagine this could happen alot. But it doesn't from what I've heard. Don't have a welder, maybe I'll try super-glue. hehe..

| Taurus vs ????????????
I have a Taurus PT940. At firs I hated it due to magazine problems. Since the have been fixed, it took 3 months, I kind of like the PT940. It is reasonably accurate (considering my maksmanship skills) and fun to shoot. Since the magazine issue has been fixed I have had no problems. Now the comparison. I also have a springfield XD9 sub compact. It is a real gun. Accuarcy (again my skills), and also fun to shoot. but field strip them both. Compare the Taurus to the XD. There is no comparison. The XD wins hand down for design and the way it is put together, materials, and engineering. Hell, I would take the XD anywhere and bet my life on it. Somehow I just have not got the same confidence with the Taurus. Agreeably there is some difference in the MSRP.

Don't have a welder, maybe I'll try super-glue. hehe.. | Sounds like a bad experience. I've owned several Taurus autos and revolvers. One that I got back in the 80's was a piece of work, but all the guns I've bought "in modern times" from 1990 or so on have been high quality handguns that have shot well. I've really not had any problems at all with my Tauruses, and have been impressed by their accuracy. I have found it hard to contact them sometimes, especially about ammo suitability in their pistols. Don't know what their customer service is like at all.
I did find charter to have very good customer service. I recently had a new model bulldog break (the screw which unlatches and ejects the cylinder failed, causing the gun to think it was open and effectively lock up the revolver--first revolver that I had fail). About 500 rounds total, a few corbon DPX but not much (i.e. not at all steady diet of +P). They sent it back with a much improved trigger and totally fixed in a few weeks all free of charge. Was impressed by their friendliness and attitude.

Rich | Well we know better than to try to change your mind, but out of all the pistols I own, if I met Mr. Grizzly Bear, I would want my Taurus Raging Bull .454 Casull on hand.

I have a LOVE / HATE relationship with my Tarus PT 940. At first I had magazine issues which were finally resolved after 4 replacements.
It is an extreemly solid gun and nice to shoot with very controllable recoil. Accuracy is another issue.
Any comments from anyone on this model.

Mooseman won't trust a Taurus, and I got total trust in two of them. Weird world.

Just got done shooting the Taurus Judge.
What a blllllllllllaaaaaaaasssssssstttttttt !!!!!!!!
If there's a pistol that has fun written all over it, this is it.
Although one wonders what the rifled slugs are good for given the .45 colt option, they are sure fun to shoot. Ka-Blam ! Fairly accurate too. Maybe the sound and muzzle blast alone would scare off would be predators (just kidding.....)
Have fun.

Heck, I never even thought about rifled slugs. But wouldn't just using a .45 Colt be a lot cheaper?

Cheaper and more effective too (slugs go about 1300 fps but weigh only 100 grains). But the slugs are FUnnnnnnn !

Why would they be more fun than the .45 Colts? Not needling you, genuinely curious.

Make more of a deep ka-boom and alot of flame out the barrel........45 colts fun too, but more like conventional round out of any revolver.
Cheers.

Have fun. | How was the recoil? Was it quick to get back on target, or did it take some practice? Looks like a great piece. I like my Model 65 .357 a lot. Totally accurate.

The UL recoils quite a bit--maybe like a .44 mag with midrange loads. The grips, which I personally like but some don't, help tame this. Follow up shots are not very difficult -- not any more so than .38 snub with +Ps for example. It does take some practice to shoot well, but the hi-viz sight really helps. The normal weight version recoil is alot like a .44 special or .357 with 4" barrel--not bad at all. As long as you take a little time you can fire reasonably accurately and quickly. The nice thing is that the gun's a great point and shoot with the birdshot or buck -- the bird will cover a normal silohette inside of 10 yards and the buck has about 1" or so between pellets at the same range.
Haven't gotten around to busting clays yet, but this is next ! The gun itself is just plain fun for me to shoot. If you ever wanted to try offhand point shooting at 7 yards or so this is the gun to do it with.
Best of luck and glad you like your model 65. Enjoy and Cheers

There's definately a Taurus debate with some angry folks on one side. I like my Taurus alot though. I can't say who is right. | I never noticed, mine says Miami on one side & "Brazil" on the other. Mine is the latet model, stainless, with the accessory rail. I love the gun!

Hi all, new to this forum and I must admit I am at a bit of a loss. I am considering getting a Taurus 617 as a CCW. I am weighing that against a S&W 686+. As you can tell I'm looking for a .357 snubbie and the 7 rd capacity is an absolute plus. I currently carry a Charter Off Duty .38 spc, or when even more concealability is needed, a Kel-Tec P3AT .380. Sometimes both. I am pretty decent with the Charter but the P3AT is another matter. My big ol' mitts just kind of swallow up that little guy and the long DAO trigger pull just makes matters worse. Oh I can put them all in a man sized target at 15-20 feet. Trouble is one may be in the ankle and another between the eyes. Basically its status is one of what I guess you'd call the "belly gun". Something to carry when you don't have much other choice. Even loaded up with Extreme Shock ammo, both it and the Charter .38 with its 5 rounds leave me feeling a bit lacking in the self defense department should it become necessary.
So that's where I'm at. Positively want a wheel gun and the 617 and 686 both seem to fill the bill as to what I'm looking for, potent caliber and good firepower capacity. Price is a definite consideration so I am leaning toward the Taurus. I know you get what you pay for and that the SW is undoubtedly the higher quality of the two. Reading through the posts I don't know what to think. There seems to be the camp that wouldn't own a Taurus on a bet. Then there are those who wouldn't ever part with their Taursus's (Tauri?). My son-in-law, in fact, had a Titanium .45 ACP Taurus revolver. He got rid of it though more on the grounds of what he heard about it's reliability then actual experience I think. Not sure, have to ask him more about it.
Anyway, I like to hear your comments and/or suggestions. Thanks a lot!

my primate friend,
I'd buy the smith for ccw.
Love my taurus's, but in a wheelgun with $ for CCW and primary carry I'd personally carry the new smith in .44 special
My car/house gun is the judge.
my carry gun is the new model 40
cheers
