Below are some pics of my ported 6" barrel Model 608. I've finally gotten time to take it out again (since Halloween's over, my seasonal work is finally done) and so far, after about 500 rounds, no problems yet whatsoever. I also don't find the trigger pull to be that hard, either. No difficulties with chambering .38s either. I will say one minor thing at first. The extractor was a little sticky, and the rounds didn't always drop out freely, but as it's been fired, cleaned, and oiled, that seems to have cleared up. That's my experience so far, YMMV. - Coeloptera |

I only own one Taurus, large frame 44 Mag model SS44 w/4" barrel, and have dealt with the barrage of Taurus neg comments. However, mine is a champ...excellent shooter every time. Initially got it for self-defense, then went with an XD45ACP...to help reduce potential collateral damage should I need to use it at home. I carry the Taurus in the vehicle and still shoot it every chance I get, with a wide variety of reloads. I especially like to take the Taurus 44 with me into the Idaho backwoods, to help level the playing field should I run across one of the big bears we have around here. I've got a hot LBT load that'll ensure I walk away from the potential confrontation.

Great picture of a successful hog hunt... What was the load you used, factory or reload? What was the distance when you took the hog, and did it stop the hog right away?

YeeHaw...that's a deadly load for your 44. I too really like the XTP bullet, in 240 grains. I recently bought some H110 to load up a few loads for my ventures into the woods, and will most likely duplicate the load you used, or maybe a half grain of powder heavier. I've never shot a 460, but hope to some day. Closest I've come to it is probably a hot 45-70 round. The new Bushmaster 450 Thumper has my attention. 7mm was my favorite deer hunting rifle when I lived in Minot, ND. Really a flat shooter with Nosler BT 140 grain loads. Sure didn't want to hit them in the wrong place, as I did once and got hamburger. I have been carrying my 44 in the SE Idaho woods on camping, fishing and hiking trips, loaded with hot XTP rounds (using Unique powder). Soon it will be with hot XTP and LBT loads, using H110. I've wondered how the 44 would do if I'm confronted with an aggressive four-legged creature. Hope it'll do me well enough, so I can live to tell about the experience. Thanks again for the pics, and info on the 44 load. Oh, are those hogs good to eat? How do they compare to a domestic hog/pig?

I like them better than domestic and so does my kids. I smoke the hams in my smoker and sometimes the ribs too.Mostly i single cut each rib and deep fry in a old cast iron frying pan. I ,m looking at a raging bull 500 on line right now. I,ve had good with taurus . ROGER

Well, should I happen across one of those wild hogs I know it makes for a delicious meal. Yes, I too have had good experiences with my Taurus. It's a newer model and seems to be void of the earlier problems I've had others tell me about. The 500 Raging Bull??? What you going after with that canon? One of my sisters is about 5'2" and she told me the time she owned a 454. Really took me back. I have wanted to shoot both of those calibers but haven't done so yet...

I've been wondering what that kind of recoil feels like, in a 454 or 500; especially after firing off a hot 44 Mag round and my hand is stinging a bit...and I have a heavy, large frame Taurus - similar weight as a Rehawk and Blackhawk that off-sets recoil pretty well.

Gone back and read the actual owners that had problems with Taurus. It seem that all the bad stuff is on their auto pistols. Nobody saying anything bad about their revolvers? Back to the hearsay theories. Last edited by gandog56; 11-29-2007 at 02:06 PM. |

Just went out and shot 200 rounds of my new reloads through my PT140 ss and my 24/7 ss .40 not one problem. Just got back into this and I used 2 bullet types and 5 different powders, charges to find what I wanted to use. At 15 and 25 yards neither gun or any load ever went outa the 2" outer with most of them all in the 1" center circle of the 4" targets. Not bad for a $300. or so guns outa the box, will all of the others do that?

So, would you recommend purchasing a 454, or do you think the 44 does just fine? I've been thinking about it for years, but have held off on a purchase.

The advantage to the .44mag. is you can carry a lighter revolver.
