Taurus PT709 SLIM...

I know it has been a month or two since this last post, but Carters Country right here in Spring has the new Slim 9 709B in-stock. Priced right at $319.00. I have been collecting Taurus pistols lately...great guns for the price range. The 709B fires nice, seems a little inaccurate (I like to blame the pistol and not my jerky / pulling trigger finger). For a concealed carry gun, this is a great option. I find I can carry in most positions without really modifying my clothing style. I would recommend this pistol. Matter of fact, will be picking up another one this weekend for my wife to keep around.

Went there yesterday, thinking great price! They want $399, so ended up at Academy on Rayford Sawdust, and picked it up for $349.

Already cleaned it up and will fire it this weekend, had to dremel the rough edges from the plastic guides in the magazines, they kept catching and wouldn't lock the slide back. I think the mags are realy poorly made, but the weapon itself, I am initially impressed, will see how it shoots this weekend.

I picked up a stainless version yesterday at JJ's Pawn Shop in Beaumont yesterday for $399. They sell all sorts of firearms. Although the name says "pawn" and they do...........they are in fact a new firearms retailer deluxe. They seem so be the only place in Southeast Texas with any supply at all of the new Taurus 'Slim' 9mm. I also spotted a FN "five-seven" model NIB. Maybe I should..........

You should have come into houston, though at todays gas prices, maybe it would have averaged same cost (349 vs. 399), I've found them at 3 different Academy's now; Woodlands (where I bought mine), South Houston (Hobby Area), and Dearbrook (Humble). Of course finding ammo in houston is another story, good thing I have a stock pile of 9mm for my Glock 17... I was originaly going to buy a G26 for CC, but then I saw the PT709, liked the thiness, and went home and researched it on the web, then went the next day and bought it.

I bought this gun (the PT709 Slim) at a local gun show last weekend. I was looking for something small I could conceal and carry. I was originally looking at a Bersa, but when I saw the "Slim" and felt how it sat in my hand, I knew it was perfect. I haven't shot it yet, but my husband and I plan to take it out this weekend and fire some rounds through it. I'm excited to see how it does. Before this, I had a .380 Firestar that jammed constantly...I needed something more reliable and I needed something to carry. I wanted something small like my husband's PPK, but I hear (and I am hoping) that the PT709 won't kick as bad as the PPK.

Well, I have 200, trouble free, rounds downrange with it. One adjusting the sights, I was ammazed at how well it handles, it is very easy to turn a little hole into a big hole, even at 15yards.

My only concern is the spent casings bulge slightly, I've seen this problem with barretta, but not my glock. I don't think the bulging is enough to become a problem though.

I picked up a Taurus 709 this week. Bass Pro in Dallas was selling it for about $375 with tax.

I like the ergonomics of the pistol. It fits well in my hand, has a decent weight and balance, and the manual safety doesn't get in the way if you want to ignore it (or if you chose to use it, it is easily controlled by the thumb).

Magazine capacity is less than I'm used to at 7+1, but when you're buying a pistol of this size, that is the compromise. Recoil is very minimal, and I like the sights, especially the fact the rear is adjustable.

Now for the bad news, I have had a ton of trouble with the empty casing not ejecting properly.

After I got the gun, I took it home and cleaned it very thoroughly, removing that Vaseline-like goo, and applying lube in the appropriate points.

I took it to the range and began firing Winchester White Box ammo. I literally could not make it through a single magazine without a spent casing failing to eject. It was not the type of malfunction that you can just tap, rack and continue. It required locking the slide, ejecting the magazine, and reaching in to pry the casing loose. I switched to the cheap 9mm target ammo that Bass Pro stocks (Winchester SRX @ $14.00 if I recall), and had no better luck... literally I could not get 5 shots off without the above mentioned malfunction. I went through a box of 50 rounds and could not get it to fire more than once or twice w/o a malfunction.

So, hoping that it was just a new gun that needed to be "broken in" and perhaps a different ammo choice would work better, I cleaned it thoroughly and returned to the range today. I was able to get through a box of 50 Monarch FMJ Brass without a malfunction. (Monarch 9mm Brass was $11.99 at academy by the way) I then moved onto a box of Federal target ammo from wal-mart ($9.47) with only one small malfunction. On about round 45 of 50 of the Federal ammo, I got a click instead of a bang. This is where I really came to appreciate the "double strike" capability of the Taurus... pulled the trigger again and it kept firing w/o incident.

then I went back to the Winchester ammo and had the same problem as before, spent casings not ejecting properly. I'm concluding either there is something wrong with my gun, or simply Winchester 9mm ammo doesn't work well in this gun for some reason.

What do you think, should I send it back to Taurus, or just steer clear of Winchester ammo?

If I remember correctly, that Winchester White Box is pretty mild stuff and I had failures to eject with my CZ75. The ammo just didn't recoil enough to cycle the action properly. Hotter ammo has always worked perfectly.

HopLax7: I was having the exact same problems, and as far as I've read, others were too. I sent it in and they returned it, saying they found a problem with the extractor and that it has been fixed. I'll see if it was fixed tomorrow at a range. Since we got the new model, I'm guessing it's a hiccup that was made with the early ones, which is easily fixed.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm up to about 700 rounds through it and this problem still persists. I've talked to several people with much more knowledge on the subject than myself and they all agree it just needs to be sent back to Taurus.

Any advice on how best to facilitate that process. Is it as simple as calling them up and making arrangements, or did you encounter anything along the way that you would do differently the next time around?

Buds is out of them right now but they had them a week ago. If you put it on your "Bud's Wish List" they are very good about locating one.
