Contender G2 vs Encore I have just purchased a G2 in 17 HMR, from what I understand the Encore is an older version/model of the single shot platform. Most of the contender encore's are pistols and the the G2 is more of a rifle. I am by no means and expert, google the T/C web site.

I can help- The Contender is a smaller version of the Encore Centerfire frame. Although the Contender is forged steel it still has limits on how large a caliber you could shoot with it. It does do one thing the Encore doesn't, it switches to rimfire on the hammer so, it's a good all-around pistol. Either Contender or Encore can be configured to rifle formation. The Encore is a serious big bore Centerfire Pistol/Rifle for hunting with large calibres or longer barrels. Thompson/Center - America's Master Gunmaker

The Contender was the original, these are the ones with the cougar engraving on the sides. Encore came next, beefier frame for more powerful chamberings such as 300 win mag and 416 rigby. G2 Contender is the second generation contender, no engraving but shoots the same barrels as the original, made to look like the encore. Aside from the bigger more powerful chamberings, the contender, like hunterspistol said, can switch from rimfire to centerfire. These are the only differences I have found. T4L
