Did you get & fire the 45/70 yet, I have a lever action 450 marlin (nearly the same as a 45/70) and I promise you in a hand gun, it will hurt you more than the 460 S&W plus you can shoot 454 & 45 long colt out of it if you like.

I would get an Encore with a 460 S&W barrel. If the 460's are too much to handle, you can drop down and shoot the 454 Casull. I was shooting my 460 with a 300 gn bullet and was getting around 1900 fps, but I could only shoot about 10 rounds before calling it quits for the day. I am now practicing with 454 casulls 250 gn bullet which shoots around 1700 fps (according to Hodgdon's data center). I get plenty of practice. Has anyone out there shot 460 S&W's and a 30-06 out of an Encore? Just wondering how they would compare with recoil. |

If you don't buy it...let me know where he is...LOL Some additional info: The range of calibers available for the Contender were fairly limited, stopping short of the .308 Winchester class cartridges. However, just about anything from .22 Long Rifle up to the .30-30 Winchester was acceptable. That prompted a boom in wildcat cartridges suitable for the Contender, such as the .30 and .357 Herretts and the various TCU cartridges, mostly based on the widely available .30-30 and .223 Remington cases. The largest factory caliber offered for the Contender was the .45-70, which although a much larger case that the .308, was feasible because of the relatively low pressure to bolt face of the cartridge. Custom gunmakers also added to the selection, such as the J. D. Jones line of JDJ cartridges, based on the .444 Marlin. Other makers pushed beyond the limits the factory set out, and did chamber Contender barrels in lighter .308 class cartridges like .270 Winchester. The Contender would also fire .410 bore shotgun shells, either through the .45 Colt barrel or through a special 21 inch smoothbore shotgun barrel. Last edited by oldjarhead; 03-24-2008 at 01:34 PM. I would try SSK for a new caliber to shoot. They have some very interesting ones.

well, i just got a great deal on a 10" 44 barrel, and I took it! Not exactly what i wanted but the deal was good and the timing right. I used to have a Super redhawk 44, nickel plated, scope...I was 19 and thought i looked cool with it. i still think i'd look cool with it! So now i have the 7mmTCU, the 45, and a 44. But i am still looking for that one piece that grabs my attention. I think the next jump tho is gonna cost me! I'll let ya know how i like the 44, and if i dont like it i know i can turn a profit on it : )

I shot my .357 Max. yesterday, 170 gr Sierra with 20.1 of H-110, good group but unpleasant to shoot more than 5 or 6 shots. Still looking forward to hunting with it this fall though. |
