The cartridge seems to have been designed to shoot a case full of IMR-4198 at about 48,000 cup, but loads in manuals don't seem to go there anymore. Manuals have loads that are all over the place, with cautions about large variations in free-bore in different barrels. Accurate Powder's loading manual says that Thompson Center told them to keep Contender loads below 42,000 psi, but TC claims to have no memory of telling them that. And, the gun has been barrelled in higher-pressure cartridges like the .375 Winchester and the 6.5 JDJ.

So, I am trying to figure out how to load the thing for long gun life as well as substantial power. Any hints out there?

I am working on a 30 Herrett load using Hornady 160 grain FTX bullet that was designed for 30-30 velocities the powder I am starting with is 20.0 gr. of IMR 4198 and hope to work my way up 1800 or 1900 fps, I plan to use this load for deer and black bear.
I'm planning my shots to be in the 25 to 125 yards range and shot placment being both lungs.

Just as an afterthought...

I am a huge Steve Herrett fan and to me he ranks up there with the likes of Elmer Keith! Which I have had the pleasure of meeting both, esp. since both were local boys from where I'm at.

Dmatt... nice looking little load there!

I may have to break down and finally get a T/C. I am looking into a 5mm Rem Rim Mag (love that round!), .357B&D (this is just too cool!), and any Herrett calibers. I like the wildcats! Maybe a long barreled .44 mag as well. Can't think of a better way to expand the arsenal in different calibers and keep the costs down.

Preferences... new or old frames??

I have both, and the New G2 is nice as you do not have the worry about the hammer when you open them. Also easier on the hands also.

I have the Contender with a Leopauld, Super 14 octagon, 44 mag, and iron sight 45 Colt round 12". Quit hunting thinking of trading for a 45 Colt revolver.

I have gotten the bug bad.I started with a old style with a 10'' 30/30 with tamer and really like that.I found a deal on a 14'' .44mag with e to hunt with scope for $150.What a shooter, didn't get a chance to hunt with it,although I took a buck with the 30/30.So the bug got worse and I bought a G2 in a 14" 7-30 waters.Waiting for a scope before I try it,getting anxious.I really like these, ranks up there with my longbows..

Wink New here....best scope set-up.

Gentlemen,

Just wanted to say how happy I am to have stumbled upon this forum. Have a small plumbing company to pay the bills, my education is in gunsmithing. Spend my free time building G&H and Hoffman style sporting rifles.

Am largely a pre-war sporter, and sidelock side by side shooter. My rimfire shooting led me to a used Contender with Super 14 22 match barrel. Have had it for a couple of years, (an amazing shooter) and recently got the bug to expand my horizons.

Googled "Contender dates of manufacture", to know what barrels are compatible with my frame, that's how I got here. Now know that the frame was made in '82 and is apparently one of the best one to own from what you guys have to say.

Am going centerfire with the next couple of barrels. My question is what scopes have brought the greatest satisfaction. Not looking to be cheap, looking for results. Any direction you can lend would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for all the great info I shall find in the future !

Johnnie.

Contender recoil

Gentlemen,
I recently traded for an early model Contender, four diget serial numner in a 44mag cal. 8 inch barrel.
Now I'm kinda oversize,6'4" well over 200lbs. I've always thought I could shoot anything! However I'm having my doughts about this one. It is BRUTAL!!!
I'm shooting factory loads, 180 grain Rem. Are there any grips or anything else that might make this thing a little tamer to shoot?

Thanks,

You probably know tis but get alonger barrel for it. To be honest tho my 44 in 12" barrel is still a kicker but not so bad I don't want to shootam now the 45-70... That is a beast but I have an 18" barrel on it. My wife shoots the 44mag too n sHe is maybe 125#s soaked.

Looking for advice on what to get to do some white tail deer hunting up in NH.
Whats a good cal and barrel length was thinking 12-14" in a 30-30.

My main intrest is in the .17 cals I have .17 rem, .17mach 4,.17ackley bee and.17HMR. Best of the bunch In MO is the mach 4. Out of a 15 in. contender, this thing is deadly!!!
