The Eastern Coyote is a relatively new inhabitant around here (15-20 years), being an island and all. But there are serious concerns about the impact they seem to be having on the caribou population. They are pretty large, even as heavy as 50-60 lb, and have been observed taking down adult caribou. The bounty is small, though, at $25 per carcass, and we are limited to using rifles up to .225 or shotguns (with shot no smaller than #2).

CV32,
When they take hold, they are very resilient and hard to get rid of. How did they get there?

The "official" story is that they came across the Gulf of St Lawrence in the mid 1980s during a winter of particularly heavy sea ice. There has long been a rumour, however, that government (in all its wisdom) introduced them. I must admit to having doubts about the "crossing the ice" theory, since yotes have probably been around in some form or another since the Ice Age, and they were never here before. (We did have wolves at one point, but they're gone now).

I suppose, but remember its Canadian funds ... ... and government is supposed to be interesting in "controlling" this relatively new presence.

I don't think wolves proliferate like yote's. They seem to breed like roaches. Sounds like an introduction to me.

Thats how they got here as well as the montian loins we now have that the dec says don't exsist in this area, (aside from the ones that some guys saw the dec letting go that is) they are still saying there are none in this part of the state but when some one shoots one they will try and charge them for shooting an endangered animal or something. rummor has it they let a few go to try and control the out of control coyote population and the deer at the same time since deer/car incidents are way up around here. heck i don't know anyone who hasn't hit a deer anymore. i have hit nearly ten since moving back to NY in 1989.

There is no bag limit here (yet), and the season runs from September through July. I gather, however, that most success is had elsewhere during the winter months. Is that right ?

Several years ago I took a large male with my 444 Marlin in Encore pistol. Did a shoulder mount that is just wicked. I named him "El Diabalo". Looking for a matching book end to this one.

Don't bother. What did you do with that one? Did you keep the skull or the tail?

Had to dispose of it in a timely fashion.
Happend while deer hunting. I'll keep that in mind if I get another.
I'm an opportunist when it comes to coyote hunting. Went intentionally last evening with some die hard types. I can sit all day waiting on a deer or anything else, I about fell asleep the first 15 minutes of that coyote hunt.
