Paintballs are a pretty good deterent, and a hit get's the message across to the owners, without losing their beloved "Fluffy". This works on Raccoons, too.
A buddy of mine got tired of cat tracks on his truck, from a dingaling neighbor's cat. He baited and caught it in a live trap, then hosed the feline down real good. When the cat's had enough for a good lesson, he let it go. It never returned.

I wish some wild cats would come around here.....I likes 'em on the grill. The secret is in low and indirect heat...mesquite wood and a good sauce.

Only trouble is they try to get off the dern grill grid for the first, oh say, five minutes.

Yum yum.

BRG3,
I, at one time was employed as an animal cruelty investigator for a county in NY. So this may or may not have any bearing on your plight in PA.(I'm only about three miles away from the northern PA line) In Ny shooting a cat or dog(companion animal) because its a nuisance is a class III felony (agrivated cruelty to an animal in the first as descibed in AG and markets law section 26) shooting a cat or dog while in the comision of endangering a livestock animal is allowed, provided the animal posed a real threat to the livestock(a cat poses no real threat to a cow or horse) and was reported to the local animal control officer within 48 hours of it being Humanely dispatched.
Feral cats are a real gray area.many comunitys consider them as wildlife some still consider them as companion animals and thus still have that protection under the law. Cats revert back to their wild state very quickly after not haveing human contact or haveing been dropped off to fend for themselves and are very hard to retam if at all. I have caught plenty of them and had to meny of them down(didn't bother me a bit I'm not a cat lover or a tree huger just a cop. well, used to be a cop).
If you live in a semi populated area and are likely to have contact with (witnesses) I would sugjest contacting your local animal control officer or local constible who takes care of animal control issues and get them to issue you a permit to dispatch nuisance animals. If you are not likely to have neighborly contact (witnesses) do like the other fine members have sugjested and fine tune your one shot one kill ratio.

Re: PA strays

Really tick folks off. Grab the cat, drive into the middle of the nearest town and toss it out of your car at a stop light. You were just returning the favor for all the unwanted cats that get dumped in the country side.

I figured this was a classic thread worth reviving. Anyone have any thoughts on what to do to flea ridden disease carrying cats that just show up?
